For me, GMax is awkward. I don't doubt that I would be able to make better models than in TS, I simply don't WANT to learn GMax.

IMO you will make better models, much better.  The first model I made in max, for example, was 10 times better than my best Blender model.  With regards to TS, the modifier stack in max and uv manipulation tools will allow much better mapping.

Indeed. I will say this though, Max is far superior than TS for unwrapping and uv editing (and I'll brook no argument on that one)

I don't know Max, but I also think TS's main fault was a lack of UV editing.

The stack system is ace for high poly, subdivison modeling too.

You dare to belittle Blender?!  Heresy!  Pure Heresy!

It may not be released by a big ass corporation, but that doesn't mean it can't do about anything Max can.  I haven't used max, but I can tell you that Blender can import\export just about any model you could ever want and even exports in .COB format.  Not to mention it has a UV unwrapper built into the damn thing.  Now I'll admit that it doesn't hold on to texture data very well.  (import a textured model and it loses its texture)  But combine that with TS, and you can do just about anything max can do I'll bet.  For Free to.

However, I will admit that TS acts as mainly an intermediary for applying tyling and the such.

There aren't any Freespace specific tuts as far as I know. Try 3d total or 3d palace. The Nemesis 2 at 3d-palace and the Joan of Arc at 3d-total are both excellent tutorials for max.

The one thing I frickin' hate about TS is the way is will spend about 20 minutes repeatedly lookin' through about about 3 directories for textures when I know they aren't there and no way to stop the bloody thing.

Max beats ten shades of ****e out of blender.  Sorry, but that's simply the way it is - and it's why people pay exorbitant sums of money to license it.

What would I gain by using an inferior tool, after all?

Plus £120 for a college course and you're laughin'.

Since everyone is so curious about max around here I was wandering: has anyone ever tried Maya? I think its at least equally powerfull as max, and its free.

I've got the free version of xsi but I can't be arsed going through the hassle of learning a new interface.
