When should I expect to be able to use shinemaps on my ATI card?
it'll be really useful when i'm say, making shinemaps, to be able to see what i'm doing, that and the game looks really flat and terrible without them.  please lemme know

Use OpenGL and you should have your shines.

I didn't think Env officially worked anyways (?)

Or am I just out the loop again?

Env is not fully implemented, tested, or even working half the time anyhow, so I wouldn't count on using it until Bob gets a total implementation completed. The env stuff was more of a test to see if it would work at all in the engine.

As far as specmapping on ATI cards in D3D, don't hold your breath. It might be a little while yet till we can get it going. We were doing some very unorthodox things in doing specmaps, and ATI changed thier driver behavior so that it no longer really works. In short, it shouldn't have worked in the first place, so now we're going to have to use shaders to do it.

Tad of catious correction:

AFAIK it will need the MATERIAL SYSTEM to work, but it won't need DX9 shaders (and DX9 cards).
Is that correct?

though some DX9 optimizations would be nice
OGL is working fine, sure i get no envmaps, but i got  a steady 100+ FPS and everything (even DaB's shockwaves) works fine

shaders and the new rendering system will only make things smoother, more stable, and more easily accessible, and i am awaiting it  with great anticipation
