Is there a smart shader that can produce high dynamic light range? Cuz if shaders can be made to make games look that TRIPPY then, why not make it usefull. I'm only aware of a Halflife 2 HDLR faker.

It's blackboard FS2. :D

The shaders might provide a useful way to do environmental mapping. Several modern games do that using shaders. HDR using them is slow and doesn't look as good as the real thing from what I'm hearing.

This is not possible as post process. It "too late" already.

Demirug, the creator of the dxTweaker is working on a plugin that allows HDR for all D3D applications. I've no idea about the status, but it's not complete.

How about coding in "bloom" from glowmaps using this? (Blurred version of the glow maps in the scene as a layer over the image)

Yeah, I had this idea before.

It should look pretty awesome.

I'd like to see motion blur too! Not this cheap effect seen in many racing games, but a movie-like effect, like in Project Offset.

@Turambar Search for a smat shader called 'HDRish'. ;)

dude, that project offset thing looks sweet

what is it?

i ought to learn to program this thing, so i can make a non-overbright washed out hdrish or something
this is just a simple filter, i found it in my ati tray tools

HDR slow? absolutely.

HDR not looking as good as the real thing? You're on crack. You can't properly do HDRI stuff in a game engine, but in renders, HDRI guarantees you the truest lighting possible. The best you can get in real time is HDR rendering, which lets the pipeling generate pixel data that's more 'true' than your monitor can display. This is a good way to get the 'movie' look, as the monitor clamps the resulting imagery down the same way as it does when you're watching a DVD.

:wtf:

I said that HDR using shaders doesn't look as good as true HDR done with high precision calculations. HDR itself is awesome.

Just what I've heard though. I have only used the OpenEXR HDR in Far Cry and SCCT and haven't gotten around to trying HL2's HDR yet.

Trippay...

I especially like the Vasudan comm ani, but it'd probably look cooler in motion. And the explosion is nice too.

Those first two shots would make kickass destop backgrounds; the Valkyrie looks unbelievable like that. :)  How exactly did you get that effect?  And, more importantly, how long until we get it as a command line option? :p

The only thing that was bad about that Visor, was that you never got to use it as often as I would have liked...
