Ah, but that is EA. Plus you can see some mistakes in the geometry. For example you can see one side of the cockpit frame but not the other when looking through the glass. Plus this game still has a year or so to go before release. Hence the lack of action and just pretty environments and planes.

Not to mention the fact that it only got about an 8.3.

lol i feel like a politician, those pictures are taken out of context, the frist one is from a distance from another plane that is moving, dunno about the second one, and the third one is from arcade mode, go get some pictures from sim mode, interface is different, even with tht id say they look pretty good for a PS2 game released in what october/novmeber. It also got an 8.3 fomr gamespot bc it didnt improve much on gameplay from the AC4, and you say it like an 8.3 is a bad score?

i agree that lock on game looks amazing

those first two shots are from the cutscene in the beginning of the game.

the sheer number of aircraft made AC5 a good buy

Ummmm problem with those screenies is that AC5 is not outputed at that res, plus the jaggies have been removed...

It doesn't look anywhere near that good in the game.

Some more REAL screens:

My biggest gripe with the graphics is the (lack of) texture resolution for the ground. Just ew... Sure it is a fun game, but it doesn't look fantastic except for a PS2 game.

Honestly, Deepblue, does it really make any difference how beautifully textured the ground is in a fighter sim?  The last time I checked, the ground is the last thing you want to see up close while trying to fly. :p The shots that you posted are admittedly beautiful, even if I find it hard to swallow that they represent in-game footage (see Madden for an example :p), but does the difference between those graphics and those of the AceCombat series really affect how good the respective games are?  Isn't it really about how well the respective aircraft are represented by their in-game counterparts, how intelligent the AI is, or how intuitive the controls are?  I know that gameplay over graphics has become somewhat of a cliche, but I still think that it holds true in many circumstances.  Endless salivating over a game's graphics plays right into the hands of certain developers who push for profits over true quality of gameplay experience.

Arcade fun!?

I remember back in '92, the first time I played AIR Combat, Namco's FIRST jet flighter game. It was an arcade machine with a full cockpit (non-funcitonal :( ) and huge projection screen. Even that "arcade" game had bogeys that actually tried to get on your six in order to get a missile lock. It had GREAT avionics because it wasn't dumbed down so much. I felt like that scientologist with "Goose" behind me.

Air Combat for PSX was a joke, Ace Comabt 2 was kool because of nice texture use back in '97 (my reason for buying a PSX). I got disappointed with the AI, but enjoyed flying down a canyon with an F-14 (ala ID4). Ace Combat 3 lured me in because of the fancy water shinies, and suborbital sequence. Once again disappointed with AI. AC4 was the last I've played and the only thing I enjoyed was the graphics and mission design.

Ac5 tried to sell us propaganda that it ran on some crazy resolution, but when I saw it in a local Best Buy, I spent my money on Rogue Squadron 3 instead.

Sigh, I've yet to find a Jet sim with a PERFECT balance of dogfighting gameplay (without a steep learnign curve) and eye candy realism. Perhaps Xbox will get it right. But I'm putting my money on the PS3 instead.

It's called resolution. That makes a huge difference. It makes the difference between something like Doom 3 or Half-Life 2 and Halo 2. Halo 2 has great post-effects, but the lack of resolution doesn't provide as much eye-candy.

Here are some screens of Blazing Angels BTW for comparison:

Notice the lack of resolution, this game would look absolutely fantastic in hi-def though. Same story with AC5. Though I think Blazing Angels has nicer fx...

yeah, ground res isn't nearly as important as blasting everything out of the sky :p

I'm working on an assumption this will be on the PC also, and therefore the resolution is a matter of personal system limitations.
