The Ace Combat series has never been about realism. It's pure arcade fun.
Arcade fun!?
I remember back in '92, the first time I played AIR Combat, Namco's FIRST jet flighter game. It was an arcade machine with a full cockpit (non-funcitonal

) and huge projection screen. Even that "arcade" game had bogeys that actually tried to get on your six in order to get a missile lock. It had GREAT avionics because it wasn't dumbed down so much. I felt like that scientologist with "Goose" behind me.
Air Combat for PSX was a joke, Ace Comabt 2 was kool because of nice texture use back in '97 (my reason for buying a PSX). I got disappointed with the AI, but enjoyed flying down a canyon with an F-14 (ala ID4). Ace Combat 3 lured me in because of the fancy water shinies, and suborbital sequence. Once again disappointed with AI. AC4 was the last I've played and the only thing I enjoyed was the graphics and mission design.
Ac5 tried to sell us propaganda that it ran on some crazy resolution, but when I saw it in a local Best Buy, I spent my money on Rogue Squadron 3 instead.
Sigh, I've yet to find a Jet sim with a PERFECT balance of dogfighting gameplay (without a steep learnign curve) and eye candy realism. Perhaps Xbox will get it right. But I'm putting my money on the PS3 instead.
