iPod nano Stress Testing
Warning: the images and descriptions in the linked-to page are not for the faint-of-heart or those sensative to iPod abuse. If neither of those categorizations apply to you, then they may be NSFW, due to the fact that I found myself giggling out loud at what you are about to see. ;7

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Yes, very useful.

Incidentally, the iTunes system for uploading music is ****.  They have their own metadata validator program (for checking the xml data that gets bunged in with the tune files), but do they actually tell you if that test passes or fails?  Of course not!

so assuming i want to get something i can hook up to my car (obviously an iPod would be the easiest, because there's dozens of add-ons you can get to hook it up to your car sound system), what should i go for?  what's the overall best bet?  if iPod wins, then i'll stick with that, but i'm interested in looking through all the alternatives.  iRiver, and the ones above, etc.

needs a 40 GB hard drive or bigger though :-/

Did you read what they did to that nano? This wasn't just wear and tear from normal - or even heavy - use, you know.

You should read just about any review of the Sandisk Cruzer Titanium flash drive. This is all standard fare. :D I have a couple of those and they seem to be strong enough, but then again I haven't done anything more stressful than stuffing them in my backpack alongside heavy books.

I don't really think that was his point. there's not much that'd survive that kind of treatment, save "the shark fin". That thing was almost indestructible, and I must say the friends of mine that bought one sure tried to wreck them.
Sure, one of them succeded by dipping it in salt water so the battery shorted, but...

I thought the point was because the plastic used in the nano is really low grade and scratches easily.

Yes I know...

I'm amused with a sense of irony and my display of rebelious behavior by pointing out the closest (and arguably better!) competitor that isn't all the rage but should be.

:D

Plus...there are alot of complaints about how easy the nano is to scratch.  Although obviously what they did is well beyond normal use (they ran it over with a car...twice!) and the thing did still work for a while...although it looked like crap.

I'm still debating as to get a iRiver or a Nano. The big thing about the nano is that it's solid state, so it's storage can survive what a regular hard drive couldn't.
This screen thing worries me though.

Not to mention the fact that the nano still lacks FM radio. And trust me, the H10 will survive. I chucked mine at the concrete ground after a bee landed on my finger and the only damage was a few hard to see chinks in the metal body. Just make sure you get the latest firmware. The old firmware aint so hot. Oh yeah, it also has removable/replacable batteries (+1). It also includes a silicone case that is great for protection, not so much for looks.

But I really use my mp3 player, I mean, when I'm out running, walking, working, stuff like that. I use it when I'm on the lawnmower, weedwacking (lots of vibrations), out and about, etc - and the iPod couldn't handle it.
