The awesome thing about it is that it's thinner than previous iPods (nano aside), and supports h.264.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

God damn. They're making me feel so impotent with my black-and-white screen iPod.

I'm sorry, but I'm not buying it.  Video on a screen that small is and will always be gimmicky at best.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting people's opinions on this matter, but how is this any more gimmicky than the iRivers that play videos?

Movies on PSPs are good for airplane rides.

Because it's an iProduct and that instantly makes it cooler.

You guys have it all wrong. I own an iRiver that plays video on its tiny screen, and let me tell you, it's not for movies. TV shows are the sweet spot if you have a nice long commute to work that's not self-propelled (i.e. train or bus, not car or bicycle). If not, it's loads of fun to toss all those humor video clips relatives send you (or things such as Big Ad) on there... ;)

Video on an iPod? Useless for all the reasons mentioned. Not even TV shows can make it useful.

Thinner iPod? Excellent.

Still using iTunes? It'll stay on the store shelf.

I've sold so many dang iPods in the last 4 years that I'm adverse to actually buying one myself.  I feel they have some serous disadvantages and have gotten too much to be a status symbol.

I just want a good MP3 player.  Thats all.  Nonetheless, I was curious to see what the annoucement was all about.

I was actually shocked by how bad the iPod's sound quality is compared to many others. Yet it still is the market leader. Just goes to show that a slick UI and good marketing are more important than a quality product.

You fail, Bob, to understand the market.

The "market" that the iPod appeals to is people who want a music player. Period. That's it. End of story. Note no mention of "AND who care about music quality." Most people don't care about music quality, so long as it meets or exceeds BROADCAST RADIO.

Blue != Bob. :p

I looked at it and it looks alright...I was hoping for something a bit different. IE with more focus on screen space and less on the dial.

Of course, I wasn't planning on buying one either way. :p Anything that small doesn't seem worth it to watch much of anything on, because you won't be able to tell what's going on in anything but the closeups.

Meh yeah. I generally put high quality .mp3s on mine. But yeah the reason for it isn't because it's actually any good but because it's one of those pick-up line sort of things:

*Sees cute blonde*

"Oh, you're iPod is just like mine but a different color."

"Wow! Cool! What do you have on yours."

*Makes out with cute blonde, finds out two weeks later she's a Scientologist. Runs away.*

Works every time.
