I have the second and fourth of those, and a few other Ice Planet sets. The first one, the 6973 DFD, is one thing I really want but don't have yet. Still waiting on a good ebay or Bricklink deal for that.

Their sets were rather hit or miss (although the best space set ever made IMO was an SP1 set)

Which one was that?

The SP Striker I mentioned earlier. I have two of these and the design is simply brilliant: (the box picture doesn't really do justice to it; maybe I can take a photo of the one I have built up)

The wings can fold and there is a control console inside that also lights up.

I still prefer block-Lego.

All this 'special pieces' stuff just seems like cheating to me.

YES. I agree. It seems like a lot of legos these days are ALL special peices. Of course, you can't really build anything good without them... Let's just say you need limitations.

I don't it's so much needing limitations as needing imagination, the real joy of Lego is the same as the joy of modelling, art of any other sort of craftwork, and that's creating something that didn't exist before you pulled it out of your own mind. As you get older, you get less imagination, and need to see the detail, and emulate other peoples ideas, when you are younger, you don't need it. I think that's where the problem started, Lego bricks are as much as craft tool for older people as a toy for younger ones nowadays.

But I think theres something that appeals to the God complex in everyone to move your hand over the Lego box or computer or guitar and create something unique, that can never be matched by copying other peoples stuff.

I was pratically banned from buying lego when I was 13. You're too old, my mam and Dad would say.......

I just have about 1500+ basic pieces.  My little brother just got some for X-Mas (we opened one early, kind of a tradition, lol), so he'll be set for a while.

I currently have 243 sets of different sizes, so I would guess that comes to out to roughly 120000 pieces. I've collected these over the years since I was 1 and never really lost interest in them, so my Lego stash has become fairly sizeable now.

Interesting way of looking at this. I can see what you mean.

Space Ice theme was my favorite :)

I think I still have that entire set downstairs in a box.  *runs and checks*  Yep, I even have the bottom one like 9/10ths of the way finished.  I liked this set the best too.

The magnet guys would be MTron, although those came a few years before Ice Planet. I have their entire line. Their things seem to go surprisingly cheap on ebay considering how good the sets are, so I have multiple copies of some of their sets. The only problem is, the large quarter dome in my 6989 MCM (the big six wheeled vehicle with the crane) has two large smudges on it despite the fact that it was brand new. The box was pretty worn out and this piece wasn't in any bag, so I guess it must have gotten smashed up at some point, which sucks since this is a very rare and useful piece.

Man... nostalgia planet. :) I loved all the Lego space sets, from the mid-80's grey nameless theme, to the Space Police (which rocked) and BlackTron (also supreme rockage), on to MTron (magnets! Nothing more need be said!). I think I dropped out of the Lego scene around when the Ice Planet came on to the scene, since I remember helping my bro put his together, but I had no interest in them.

I really liked the old-school train sets, too. And the Model Team - not that I ever had enough money for one of those babies. ;)

Ok, time for a trek back through nostalgia time for me:

This was WAY cool - my first exposure to shock absorbers, I believe. ;)

I loved how the front(s) would disconnect and then snap together with the flight segments up top. Plus those tall corner grid pieces were just way too cool.

This was so rakishly cool, with those swept-back pieces and the brand-new transparent-red rocket laser things. :D

This was like some kick-ass AT-AT - with missiles!

One of my all-time favorites.

This, too, had the front and back that would come off and snap together. Awesome.

I think this one above was my favorite. :)

It's an X-TIE Ugly! :D

I only ever owned the classic sets. Back in my day the guys in black suits were the coolest ones you could get!). I stopped just about the time that I was about willing to sell a kidney for the monorail set that had just come out :)

Had that one but this one was one of the coolest one I ever owned. The whole front end could move on its own or act as a transporter for the lab section in the back.

This one was cool for similar reasons. The two were the flagships of my fleet.

Ok, time for a trek back through nostalgia time for me:

I don't have some of the older ones except for the 6850 Mobile Rocket Transport, although I have at least one of everything you listed below the 6805 set. Maybe I should try to get some of those really old ones from the original 1979 classic space lineup.

Aside from the SP Striker, these are some others I really like. I have two copies of each of these since they all have great parts:

6915 Warp Wing Fighter: newer set but excellent design, my second alltime favorite, looks a little like a Pyro GX
6894 Invader: great overall small fighter
6923 Particle Ionizer: unusual concept and has quite a few things packed into it
6958 Android Base: very roomy and feature packed for the size and price and comes with a great AAA vehicle
6984 Galactic Mediator: has some shortcomings but the overall shape is great
6939 Saucer Centurion: very cool mechanism for unloading the rover
6987 Message Intercept Base: the mother of space bases, has tons of stuff, although not quite perfect
6986 Mission Commander: this one actually has a lot of flaws but it looks very cool and is an outstanding source of parts

If you are talking about the Futuron 6990 set, I'm still really trying to acquire one of those. Problem is they go for close to $400 new on ebay these days. :( I might settle for the newer Unitron monorail, which is better in some ways and worse in other ways, although even that costs close to $300.

That's the one. I never owned any of the light and sound stuff as that also appear just as I was leaving. My sister had the town fire engine though IIRC as well as this rather cool castle :)

My god, those bring back some memories. I haven't touched LEGO in years, but now I'm tempted to go dig it out of the basement again. I was especially fond of the castle sets, as I always have been a sucker for anything medieval-like... although the various spaceships and installations were a close second. I must've spent like half my childhood savings over several years just on those two types of LEGO :D

I basically went heavy on Space, Technic and Aquazone and have most of the sets they made from those themes, although I also have a lot of Town and Model Team things.

I had the blacktron base with the flashy LED segments, it was well cool (ahh, just found it, the Alpha Centuri Outpost). Had your favourite one too sandwich. The removable cell was great fun.

After that I got into Technic. Had a heavy crane, a pneumatic JCB and a rally car of sorts.

One of the things I'm working on right now is to improve that base, actually. The ship that comes with it is great but the base leaves something to be desired IMO. I make small modifications to almost all the official models I have built up, but some sets like this get larger changes.

Some more guesses: 8854 Power Crane, 8862 Backhoe Grader and uh, how big is the rally car? I can think of a couple of sets from that period that would match the description.
