Any particular reason? Or are they just very very paranoid?

It's america, the land of paranoia.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Nope... for us, 1984 was a good read. For Bush, it's a primer on how the government should work.

I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

Re: NYPD Undercover Strangeness
I really don't understand what the big fuss is.  Oh noes, teh government is watching us?!  I'd always had the impression that a goverment does, and SHOULD, keep a fairly close eye on its citizens.  It's not like they're tossing these cyclists or mourners in jail or anything.  For all the times people complain about this sort of thing, I don't see any change in my own personal life.  I don't see Big Brother watching over my shoulder.  So...meh.  I'm sure far worse things are going on in the world.

What right do they have to infiltrate groups that are commiting no crime, nay video their members for survellience purposes when they're taking part in peaceful protest?

Government is there to serve the people, not the reverse.

You're not meant to see Big Brother until they haul you off in the night to the Ministry of Truth.
