in one of the cutscenes it has Bosch typing out on a keyboard. why? it's been almost 300 years! you'd thing they'd have thought command or something but no, Bosch has to learn keystroke on his 300 year old laptop! and why a 2D screen? why not a 3D holoscreen like the vasudans use? (see vasudan main hall campaign room animation) [V] may be gods, but their thinking seems quite 20th century.

And our thinking also happens to be awful 20th century as well.

I loved that scene, it makes us identify (even a little bit) with Aken Bosch, even with that one simple detail.  Sometimes you have to incorporate details of your target audience's life in with whatever you're doing, you want to connect with the humanity in the story and draw your audience in with even a small and stupidly familiar detail, such as the sound of a man typing at a keyboard...

I think it's a poor trend within the SF genre to focus too much on the toys and technology, and too little on the story you were trying to tell and the life you were trying to convey.

Although I gotta admit, voice recognition would sure be a hell of a lot easier on my carpal-tunnel syndrome

I told you that It would be done by November, well, mostly anyway...

I'm working on something new... shhhhh, it's a seceret.

really? I may sound weird, but when it's 2 am, I really don't want to talk loud. Plus imagine the scene: "ok dudes, leave the bridge, I have some important omega classed informations to tell to the computer". hem yeah...
I think keyboard is the best interface, and I'm sure in 50 years you'll still have a keyboard (and in 300 years too, maybe). Cars have 100 years know, and they still use steering wheels.

Why COULDN'T Bosch use a laptop if he wanted to? People today use all sorts of antiques, just because they're there, or they like to feel like they're in a different time. It's very possible that our beloved Admiral had somehow gotten ahold of a genuine 20th century computer, and liked using it.

Hmmm, I see problems with the avatar idea:

Little Jimmy: Avatar, get me some pr0n!!
Avatar: Yes oh great overlord of all things binary, I shall make it my single most important crusade in your service to search out pr0n of the highest quality for your viewing pleasure.
Little Jimmy's mum: What the hell did your little creature just say?!?
Little Jimmy: *whispering* Shut it avatar.
Avatar: Indeed!! I shall speak of my pr0n crusade no longer!!
Little Jimmy's mum: I wondered why you were on that internet thing so late into the night.

*sounds of pr0n crazed youth being repeatedly beaten with footwear whilst his trusty avatar is killed by an unrecoverable error*

Yeah, he probably uses it for sentimental reasons.

I really like the interface that is shown to good effect in the Final Fantasy movie... holo-keyboard AND holo-screen.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Pfeh! I like Avatars

Still, I could see a lot of combinations done, but a holo display is the most flexible with interface (universal keyboard displays and such) as programming options.

Even then, the little kiddies with an Avatar would be cute, and avoids any pr0n crusades me mastah!

The keyboard Bosch was using was massively different. It clearly had less buttons than our QWERTY type keyboards, or the Dvorak ones. So it was probably not an antique.

which is why i said Neural Interface instead of voice interface...plus it's more high tech.

they are already redisigning keyboards all the time, and they are already developing interfaces better than keyboards, so in 50 years they will be obsolete let alone 300. you don't seem to realize how fast tech is improving. look at the first keyboards for type writers, now look at the new ones. then take into account that technology is advancing on a curve. now extrapalate 300 years. yeah, like i said, no keyboards for bosch.
