Advice of Buying a New Laptop
I plan to buy a new laptop for I will probably travel this year.  So I thought having a computer with me will be more convenient when I'm flying around the globe.  I am not a computer person and normally use the computer to lurk on  the internet, prepare word documents & presentations, and write some music.  I know many of you know a lot about computer and I hope to get some advice and suggestions on what's worth paying a $750 - $1000 for (such as laptop manufacturer, processor, memory).  Thanks.

Re: Advice of Buying a New Laptop
I bought a used Thinkpad T22 for $400. It works pretty good - the only problems I've noticed are poor battery life, and the left mouse clicker on the laptop sometimes isn't very responsive. With a battery capacity of 17.03 Wh out of the original 38.88 Wh, I get roughly an hour of life with wireless ethernet and a bluetooth mouse. (While browsing websites)

Downsides - No wired ethernet (The ethernet card is $50 or less, wireless ethernet works most everywhere tho so it's rarely a problem). No internal wireless bluetooth/ethernet (Mostly because the laptop is so old). The processor, while 1 Ghz, is a P3 rather than a P-M so it's not as efficient. The videocard is also pretty lacking, although that does mean it doesn't sap the battery life, and it's common for IBM tops. There's only one USB port on the back; on the side would be more convenient. The speakers (like nearly all laptops) aren't that great; but the headphone jack is easy to get to.

Upsides - Much cheaper than buying a new laptop. It's very compact, I was able to fit it in my backpack with at least one textbook and my large binder. It's also pretty light. I was lucky enough to get an abnormally high screen resolution - 1400x1050. Since I'm on 1280x1024 on my desktop, the usual laptop 1024x768 seemed cramped. It also has a "ThinkLight", which is handy if you're using the laptop in the dark...it's a small LED above the screen that lights up the keyboard. The jacks for the sound card are conveniently located on the left. I think it has an S-Video port on the back too, but I've never tried it out; it would be useful for powerpoint or whatever. Volume controls are easy to find in the dark (Up/down/mute).

Re: Advice of Buying a New Laptop
I've been mostly happy with my Toshiba 1955-S805/S803, except, you know for the virus and my 2 year old cousin breaking it.  I've found it priced by some dealers down in the $768 range.  It's been a great computer for me, but now I'm hearing owners say stuff about damaged motherboards and overheating, which mine never really did, but I'm starting to think I might have got one of the better ones.  Dunno.

I find used Thinkpads to be exceptionally good for travelling, if you get a T22/23 it's very fast for the price.

When you say you want to write music are you talking about writing sheet music/guitar tab or do you mean making music with cubase or some other audio program?

Re: Advice of Buying a New Laptop
Thanks very much, WMCoolmon for your detail input, and Trayus.  The reason I am willing to pay the price range I stated is because I do not know the deal with notebook, and hope I could to get a proper one that will still be compatible in a few years time.  But I am quite happy if I don't have to pay that much to get a reasonably good one.

Maeglamor, I am a classical piano player and I compose piano pieces.  I want to try writing a small symphony and use some musical software for composing but my two computers at home (a Win 95/ Pantium , and a Win 98/ Pantium I) are a bit too old to run the software.

I wish I could play the piano. I quit many years ago and took up the flute, which I like very much, but the piano is so useful.

Re: Advice of Buying a New Laptop
Really, I always wanted to try flute.  I joined my high school band years ago and they didn't let me play the flute but trumpet instead.  I didn't much like it and quit the band after a year.

Anyone here has comments about Apple the computer?

Re: Advice of Buying a New Laptop
The problems with the Mac is compatibility. Just about everyone uses PCs so if you get a mac you'll constantly be prevented from doing things that everyone else is doing because you need windows or cause no one thought to bring out drivers for it.

If you're fairly computer literate you can get around this often. Other people simply don't care. If you do care and don't know where to look for workarounds then you've got a problem though.

Re: Advice of Buying a New Laptop
But then again http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

(this is going to be a little off topic heh, sorry, but the news is really fresh)

I always had the view of Macintosh being the standard for professional audio/video editing and basically art focused jobs. The only thing that the PC's are really "needing" that compatibility with is games. Yeah, you can do more things with a Windows based PC, but really, anyone I've known to work with anything related to art - they did it on a Macintosh.

However with the new Intel Mac's, you'll probably be able to run both operating systems and finally eliminate the bull****, get the best of both worlds.

Just something to consider anyway. You're probably better off buying the Windows PC though - saves the hassle of said compatibility.

Myself, wouldn't mind the Mac over PC when we come down to it. All I really play is FreeSpace, everything else on consoles, and I could do a hell of a lot on a Mac regarding audio and video and imaging, which is what I like to do.

Naturally though, Mac's are pricey, and really, for a reason.

You said $1000 - http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71608/wo/1IEAI1tKlQAS3C0URqi1cGVuTkD/3.SLID?nclm=iBook&mco=6DF57917

Naturally the new ones with Intel processors are the big bang now, but they're still pricey. I wouldn't mind the thing in the above link if I had $1000 to spend on a laptop. It'd be my first choice.

Re: Advice of Buying a New Laptop
I'm impressed with the power connector on the macbook pro. However $2000 sounds a bit steep...

I don't really have anything against macs in general, except that they're priced well above a PC of equal use. The only place where this doesn't really hold true is the Mac mini.
