War-based FPS settings.
given the rather disturbing prevelance of FPS's with a WW2-era setting (pick one, really) one really has to wonder, it won't be long until a hoarde of FPS games touch on other Wars that ocurred on this planet, there was a light touching on vietnam here and there, and not forgetting the odd "desert storm" type setting, too.
so outta curiousity, what kind of "real-world" war settings that people here would like to see.

Re: War-based FPS settings.
Any and all of them I guess. One conflict location is generally as good as another.

There is however a question of whether it's a good idea to base a source of entertainment around a current-time conflict. I can entirely appreciate living family members / survivors of the conflict not being very happy with seeing what they've been through dramatised in such a way. (And before someone points out that many WW2 survivors are still alive, keep in mind that computer games based on that conflict didn't come out till some decades later.. though I imagine that was partly due to the fact the tech didn't exist at the time).

Re: War-based FPS settings.
Zulu war?  Perfect for the Doom3 engine.  Well, if you set it at night and in a very small, tight valley.  But at least the AI is there......
Falklands war; which Op:Flashpoint was rather a lot like, except without the same sort of naval taskforce aspect.  Still, the setting is probably small enough that you could simulate the entire area reasonably accurately.
Soviet-Afghan War (not sure on the exact name for this); play as commies versus fundies!
Korean War; because everyone's forgotten that one, yet it was pretty major and a defining event of the 20th century.

Hear hear! We already got an excellent flight simulator dedicated to our wars (well, 50% of it anyway), a fps would be very cool

16th Century! Matchlock muskets FTW! w00t!

In all seriousness, the only thing that matters to me is that the game be fun. I don't play first-person shooters for the historical edification.

...and what's not fun in lining up in a straight line and firing a slow loading gun that might explode on you while hoping that you don't get plowed down first? ;)

Now a Napoleonic strategy game like Rome: Total War would be fun though...

I'm up for WWI, maybe. The stuff like Belleau Wood was pretty rough ****, and it wasn't trenches. I'm also up for some Mogadishu settings, and maybe Beirut? Hell, Kosovo, even. And KOREA DAMMIT. The Frozen Chosin... come on. Hurry it up.

that's kinda the point of all of this, the sad thing is, WW2's been done to death, really. thanks to medal of honor and call of duty, et al, all great games, but as for setting, pretty much the same.

Re: War-based FPS settings.
WWII is a popular setting for FPS games simply because that there are so many stories to tell for as massive a war it was. Games have done the North Africa campaign, D-Day countless times, the war in the Pacific, the Soviet defense... There's just so much that can be done with WWII, and so many different ways to do it. You have massive air battles like the Battle of Britain, island-hopping missions like Gaudalcanal or Tarawa, tank battles like the Bulge or Kursk, and a combination (D-Day).

WWI has been done once or twice, I believe (one of the more interesting ones was Iron Fist, or something along those lines). Korea would be interesting, especially the aforementioned Chosin Basin or, better yet, the landing at Inchon or the UN defense in South Korea.

Mogadishu has been done before, and rather well IIRC (DF: Black Hawk Down). BF:V covered Vietnam pretty well IMHO, and Medal of Honor/Call of Duty have done extremely well with World War II.
Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.

Call of Duty is the only WW2 era FPS' that I like. MOH is too...too...umm... flatspug.

I want a game as intense and realistic as CoD2 but in a futuristic setting.

Re: War-based FPS settings.
Well, there wasn't much strategy to WWI. Most of them battles were the same:

Step 1: Throw lots of artillery at the other guy's trench. Throw in some poison gas while you're at it.

Step 2: Instruct everyone to go "Over the Top" of the trench and run towards the other guy's trench while they are shooting at you with rifles, machine guns, and artillery.

Step 3: Assuming you actually make it to the other trench, you still need to try and fight the people who are already inside of it.

Step 4: Assuming you made it to step 3, you most often died.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Plus, contrary to what is thought, 'going over the top' only occured once or twice a year, and most of the time you spent in the trenches was just sitting there hoping not to get your knackers blown off. I don't know about you, but if I wanted a game composed of sitting there doing nothing intersperced with a few seconds of action before returning to just sitting there doing nothing, i'd play Joint Operations. :doubt:

I have been hearing about that game for the last two years. When is it coming out anyway? This could really be something revolutionary if it turns out to be everything they say it is.

Probably this year, but the same was said in 2005.
Thanks the gods, that the makers have the backing and the guts to say:
It is done when it's done.

Though the fact that they don't have time for making a demo suggests that they're pretty close to release.

Re: War-based FPS settings.
I would be happy with realistic WW2 game set on the Eastern Front. Including gems like
- Partisans
- Armour clashes
- Soviet artillery
- Ersatzgruppen
- Comissars
- Penal battaillions
- ethnic cleansings
- scorched earth warfare
- bloodbaths
- mass killings
- SS
- NKVD
- suicide missions
And other funny things!
lol wtf
