Because it'll force US companies to get with the ****ing program, or go bankrupt.

If they sort their **** out, it'll help with the trade deficit.

I dunno, it kind of bothers me that the Pres. can make those kinds of decisions, esp. considering it sounds like it was a judicial matter in the Chrysler case...although that may be an issue with the article itself.

Re: Bush Actually Does Something Right!
Staying out of this is a good thing IMHO.

It bothers me that the government can step in and mess with the economy any time it wants to; in general, that's just asking for trouble.  We used to have nice regular cycles of boom-recession-boom-recession during the 1800s, but now that we've had a minimally-interrupted boom for 25 years I'm worried what will happen when the inevitable downturn comes.

That coupled with the fact that we have record debt and nobody saves any money anymore. :doubt:

I just wish there was more emphasis on product and less on profit.

I hate how "Corporate Welfare" is ok but actually helping poor people is a waste of money because they're "lazy".

A conservative may hate subsidies, but that doesn't mean that they hate the poor. It is possible for a conservative to donate money etc. to the poor and yet still think the Gov't doesn't have the right to levy negative taxation or subsidies. You, I think, seem to confuse Bush's Policies and the Republicans actions as being conservative when that is hardly the case.

Re: Bush Actually Does Something Right!
I'm all for donating money to charity, the poor, etc. if they need it.  I just don't want the government to do it, because they invariably screw it up. :D

With the government handling it, there's inevitable waste, overhead, funds being diverted to other causes (see gasoline taxes), and investing in things that you yourself wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
