Be carefull when buying PC games in Game stores
Has anyone else had this problem, i just bought a copy of Neverwinter nights Deluxe and battle for ME2, only to discover that BFME2 had no disks in the box!!! and NWN had no CD-key! so i returned to Game and the fools wont return them!!!!!!!! even though they didn't provide me with anydisks for BFME2 and they won't return NWN either, they say that due to the Law(UK) that PC games cannot be returned and exchanged, As for BFME2 they say that i just wanted to get another free disk and sell it on what Crap! Must be some law against that. I've had to return loads of games (generally) with missing codes. Pain in the ass.

I'm guessing that the games were in shrink-wrapping before you unwrapped them?

If that's the case then you're entirely within your rights to take this further. I've no love for the way Game stores work and you deserve the products you paid for.

Re: Be carefull when buying PC games in Game store
Contact your local Trading Standards Office and tell them. They love it when Computer Stores try this on ;)

My brother is a Trading Standards Officer, so I happen to know that requesting a replacement of the same game for an incorrectly packaged version is not evidence of Piracy in the slightest, no matter what the shop may want you to believe.

Edit : They will most likely tell you to go to the shop and tell them that if they refuse to replace the faulty goods, you will be initiating legal proceedings, that always makes 'em **** bricks anyway ;)

Re: Be carefull when buying PC games in Game stores
yeah, i had that happen to me too, but thankfully the store i purchased my games from, Compusmart here in Toronto, gave me no problems what so ever.  In fact i make a point of shopping with them because of this good service

I had a copy of HL2 with a used CD Key... and a copy of The Movies missing the Game disc...definatly didn't make the bonus disc feel like such a bonus!

so my props to Compusmart and all other retailers who offer hassle free shopping!  Everyone support the good guys

Re: Be carefull when buying PC games in Game stores
They're legally obliged to replace, repair or refund (with store credit usually) any game which doesn't function in the manner which they said it would.

As with most things, the people selling you stuff have orders to push their luck insofar as denying returns go. They'll ***** and moan and whine about store policy, but the fact is, they've got to replace/repair any defective product and/or refund it if they keep giving you defective ones.

And whilst we're on the subject, anyone returning Hardware to a shop in the UK, do not accept a repair if you are still within warranty. Getting goods repaired will invalidate any right to get it replaced if the repaired unit fails, you would only be able to get it repaired again, even if it's still under warranty. Always demand a replacement if it is within your rights to do so.

if anything is dead when you buy it(within a week or two), the store is obliged to replace it on site, if else, they have to send it to the manufactuer's repair center for a warrenty repair.

on the subject on the game, if it isn't in the box, the game store is obliged to either find the disc, that you need, or replace it with a proper one, pirate, nothing, it's just the store jerking you around.

make sure you keep your reciept.

Re: Be carefull when buying PC games in Game stores
I will be going to my local trading standards office on monday before i start work. Yeah they where pre-packed. Why is it tho over the past 2 years it is getting more and more difficult to return PC games example Half-life2 but i aint going to start on that one or i will be here for ever! Take console games you can return them even re-sale them without any fuss but when it comes to a pc game you usally end up arguing for hours!

Re: Be carefull when buying PC games in Game store
Mostly because every store out there is worried about people pirating games then bringing them right back... or saw the whole thing as an oppertunity to stop giving refunds on PC games by claiming that the user "might" have pirated them... thus ensuring that every unit they sold stayed sold.

Some interesting tips to keep note of.

EB refused to allow my brother to return World of Warcraft because it had been opened. Though I think that's still legit because it wasn't faulty, and he was just trying to swap it for another game.

They're lying.

just to echo everyong else, tell them you'll report them to the Office of Fair Trading under the Sales of Goods Act 1979; you have a right to return any goods which do not meet the specified description (in this case the contents of the box).  I almost want to buy a Pc game from GAME just to tell them to **** off when they try and convince me I can't return it - even if you agree to their 'you know you can't take this back' spiel, a retailer can't override the SOG Act.

Yet more reasons to pirate instead of buy.......
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

With WoW, it's understandable, as he could've just scalped the key-code.

Still, they're obliged to take it back.

Re: Be carefull when buying PC games in Game store
If you need the money you spent on a game back, it's doubtful that the store which has money is likely to be afraid of you in any way, meaning realistically, you're ****ed and should live with the fact you got scammed.

Perhaps learn from it and never actually buy anything ever again unless you have to (MMO's).
