Lol. That thing just takes the name and state and feeds them through Google. All it had on me was a Golden Tee player database and the certified judges list for Magic: the Gathering.

Didn't read the 'UK' bit of the title, did we?

Lucky you.  It shows my name, address, family members, neighbours, and even offers directions to my house.  I did a little experiment and typed in the 2nd name of somebody I know who went to uni in Stirling and... lo and behold, it found them.

Or... you might not actually exist. For all we know, you're actually a program built into the forum... :nervous:

Re: This is how much privacy you get in the UK
It couldn't find me either :)

I guess I fail at life then :(

EDIT : On the other hand if I type in family member names then I do get hits. It's cause I don't go by my first name. If I type that in I do get exactly what Aldo describes. I guess it's a good idea to obfuscate my own name then :D

Guess how lucky I am to live in Finland?  :D

I don't show on that page. Google finds me, however, but even that only tells about my schools in past years and currently... plus the pages are all in Finnish so quite few foreign people would even understand me. I have teh privacy too!

Actually, my nick (Herra Tohtori) finds more things about me than my real name. I dunno whether I should be proud or depressed about this fact.

You realise that you can tick a box on when registering your vote to be knocked off the commercial list?

But I'll agree the very fact that the government can sell the electoral register to anyone is ridiculous. They probably make millions from the sale of our details, and it shows exactly how secure our identities are going to be when they bring in these useless cards. I wouldn't trust any party not to cash in on the privacy of its citizens.

Woo, it can't find me.
But then, I'm not on the electoral register, so it wouldn't.

I do turn up quite a bit in Google though.

All it found on me was what can be found through a WHOIS of one of my domains - and the names of my siblings.

Re: This is how much privacy you get in the UK
It found quite a few things for me - a bunch of Lugnet posts from a few years ago, that old washington post article and some other random postings in various places - but nothing that would give my exact location or any other information on me. Family member searches turned up some interesting results when I forgot to include the location. Apparently there is some highly wanted Mumbai gangster with the same name as my dad. :D

What does this have to do with privacy in the UK? :p

Re: This is how much privacy you get in the UK
I've a question.

I just found my parents entries on this thing along with an option saying "remove me". When I clicked on it, it asked for a real phone number, mobile number and email account.

Why does it need all three forms of identification? Seems to me that that's more fishing for more information about a person than actually removing them from the site.

I take it back. This site is ****ing great!!!

For the non Brits amongst us that is a website offering to give me directions to the Home Secretary's private residencial address! :D

EDIT : While I'm at it. This appears to be the right Blunkett too.

In case you're wondering how it's a piece of piss to do. Go to wikipedia and find out which constituency they represent (and preferably their middle initial and name of their spouse) and then simply search in that location) :)

Still not having any luck finding an Antony Blair in Sedgefield yet though. :D

Didn't need to, as all it uses is Google. Regardless, all it probably is is optimized for UK-based sources, not like it matters.

No, it doesn't.

It searches the electoral register; the recording of every person (and household) registered to vote in the UK.  That's the whole bloody point.
