Congratulations Italy
On finally getting rid of that circus clown Berlusconi and getting a prime minister who actually, you know, possesses some common sense and tact. I'll kind of miss his crazy tirades though, he can be quite entertaining, in the "boy I'm glad he's not my head of government" kind of way.

Too bad Berlusconi hasn't got what it takes to admit defeat and he's calling for checking the votes. I so hope Italy and the rest of the EU can be rid of that embarassing idiot  :ick:

What politician would admit defeat after such a close election?

I don't really know much about Berlusconi, I should because I major in Italian at University, but I was excepting Prudi to win by a greater difference. When I heard that the elections are starting up, I was thinking that Berlusconi would suffer a major defeat, but no. What was the difference? 25,000 votes altogether?

A corrupt dude who's first thing in office is to grant immunity to himself, who controls most of the media in the country, who pisses on EU decisions and who has ruined his countries economies?

Italy is ranked 53rd by Reporters San Frontieres for press freedom; worst in europe, really.  It's an interesting list.

Re: Congratulations Italy
Those are the 2003 numbers actully, 2005 list is Here. Italy seems to have improved a little bit between them, at #42 though it's still not that impressive. Probably improved because a few media outlets finally got bold enough to actually critizise Berlusconi. Ahead of the US now though.

Also, nice to see 4 nordic countries in the top-1 ;) Wonder how the whole mohammed 'crisis' will affect next year's position for Denmark though. Guess it could go either way depending on the preferences of whoever does the ratings.

[Edit]
An interesting comparison:

Quote
132   Palestinian Authority   42,50
...
137   United States of America (in Iraq)   48,50
Guess buying off the media, blowing up their hotels and shooting cameramen with tanks isn't good, hmm?

Has any of them ever declared themselves the 'Jesus Christ of politics" ?

Bush said that God talks to him and tells him to do things (like invade Iraq).

Italy is nuts. They've got this guy, the elected a porn star to their parliment...I mean, seriously. Don't expect their politics to make any sense at all.

Re: Congratulations Italy
Well, in truth, I can't really blame them for that, not with our history in that area. A comedian got elected to parliament here not too many years ago by, among other things, promising to secure tail wind in bicycle lanes, free beer, and shorter lines in supermarkets :p Of course him running was meant as a joke, but people were sufficiently disgusted with the regular politicians at the time to send them a little message by voting him in.

Good call on the saint thing though... we definitely don't want them to end up like that.

I always point to Italy when people start on about proportional representation. Proves what a complete farce that system can end up as.

Scottish system seems to work quite well in terms of representation, if not actual parliamentary power.
