IIRC, a Christian is anyone who believes in and follows the teachings of Jesus Christ...

Exactly.

I think Kernal is trying to say mormons are not Protestants or Catholics.

Concerning the distinction of who is Christian and who isn't, yes, you did come up with the common-usage definition.

Theologically speaking, however, calling the Mormons Christian is...suspect. They reject both the Nicean Creed and the Council of Nicea, which was devised/occurred well before the division of Christianity into sects. This is essentially to reject Christianity from its founding as an institution, and to reject much of the basic doctrine that pervades all forms of it.

Kernal is essentially correct. The Mormons aren't Christian. They may have some of the same book, but they subscribe to a completely different interpretation of it from everyone else.

*shrugs* Same diff to me. They following some of the teachings of Christ, and the broad definition of Christianity remains. They may be some type of break away yeah but bleh.

Ditto Deepblue.

I know I always say this, but please don't ever claim the KJV to be anything resembling "good", "accurate", "the best", etc. As a translation, the KJV is bad. Yeah, it all sounds nice and King Jameth-y, but the accuracy is way off. Try the ASV for King Jameth-y sounding + much more accurate translation.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

we've gotten to a point in the evolution of the human race where religion is no longer necessary to instill morals in people, and is starting to have the opposite effect.  we're in the transition phase right now.  of course it makes sense that the religious will act in a hostile manner when confronted with this, but it'll pass.  if not in our lifetimes, than later in human history.

I respect your opinion, but I can't agree. What kind of bible you use is really between you and God, not you and me. ;)

What I meant was that the KJV is probably the best english version available. Unless you have a different suggestion?

I wouldn't say KJ himself was exactly unbiased, but I have no idea about the translation, but it's apparent there are Criticisms

Re: Man: God will protect me from the lioness, Lioness: O'RLY?
I read that too...

--------------------------------------------------------------

In my country a man did exactly the same, however he don't claim anything, he do it without making any statement before jumping in, however there was no real interview after, so, maybe it's the same as this guy...

However he survived, the lions just store him as a snack, just a paw over him and he was defenseless as a baby, however he survived, as the lions didn't ate or harm him, the irony is that for the act he made it seems he wanted to die, but not suicide, even so he failed miserabily...unless he only wanted to drawn attention without harming anybody else...

Except that obviously puts people at risk, what if somone tries to save you? If your going to take yourself out and make a show of it, go take pills and wander around in a crowded area away from a hospital.

Well that's not at all his problem, for various reasons, he didn't asked for help, and most important, he is supposed to be dead first, one doesn't enter intentionally in a place full of lions expecting to be rescued or just to step out and say "I am alive, god exist, and I am a moron", also if he wants he can make it again, and again, no one is going to stop him or anyone, that's the reason he succed in entering the first time, so...

  That could almost be taken almost as an homicide, or an attemp at least, there have been cases where the suicide or jumper, has fall on a "victim", the suicide survives and as she/he absorbed part of the impact, it results more injured that the suicide itself...

I seem to recall that Voltaire said something similar.
