I need a faster puter.....
Why?  Because this pic took a mere 71 minutes to render.  Blekh.

Oh, and before you ask, it's not supposed to be artsy or anything.... just give a view.

71 minutes?! ouch... oh well - it was worth it, that looks great. I like the use of lighting in it, that and the ship looks really cool (like all your "terran" ships). Nice one

did you make that model, is that why it takes so long to render? because my renders take a few seconds to render, but then again it could be my pc, dual 1.53ghz processors with 1gb ram hehehe

its not overkill if you need the speed.

My dual Athlon MP1ghz/1gb takes about 2 days to spit out a decent animation (600,000 poly scenes@4mins a frame)

I was thinking about building up my old mobo(duron800+512mb) in a case and setting it as a renderslave.

For rendering, specially animations, and even more so COMPLEX animations with high poly counts and lots of procedurals, you can NEVER have too much speed.

Well, at normal speeds, that's 7200 frames of animation.  That works out to 2.5 a minute.

wEvil: I'm going to buy a new computor soon and the one I have now (it's a Celeron 464 MHz with 654 mb) are going to be my renderslave. I'm probably going to uppgrade the processor to a Pentium 800 MHz, those should be pretty cheap now. But now to the questions.

1. How much do I "gain" in time with network rendering. The first computor is a 1.6 GHz with 512 mb and the other one a 800 MHz with 654 mb.

Let's say that if I only used the first computor to render it would take 1 hour. How long would it take if I had both to render the same scene.

2. Is it hard to set up network rendering in Max?

LOL. i have used AMD CLASS PC's, honestly, the P2 outclasses the K6-2 up to atleast 500MHZ as proof with my pc to my moms. and i was at 233MHZ. i did most of my game playing below system standards and the games already ran smoothly. like quake 3. that TNT2 NVidia card   oowee... btu wait till i get the GeForce 3............................! ITS A WRAP! but my dream machine is a Athlon above 900MHZ with 500Megs RAM just for a start. and they pretty cheep these days. i just stay away from the K6 brand... Duron brand... thunderbird brand.... penitum brand... etc etc ect.

lastly i only said those is sweet deals cause where else u gonna get a P4 at 1.5 gigs for that cheep unless u get it urself at a trade show or something. the athlon classes of those syste, are 200 dollars less.

To get a renderfarm up and running in MAX is easy - Just use the little network manager .exe file in your \3dsmax folder.

be aware that it will only be any good for doing animations since MAX scanline is not a distributed renderer..if you want one of those look at Mentalray, PRman or Brazil (dunno about finalrender)

Speed gains from going dual in mentalray are funnily enough, about twice the speed.  MAX and other not-so-parallel apps benefit about 30%, putting it way above a single CPU machine.  Also a dual machine will ALWAYS be faster than 2 single processor machines due to memory bandwidth and controller issues.

The two animations i posted up took about 2 days to render both of them.  The drydock is 630,000 polygons with about 4 samples per pixel and the shivan flyby is about 30,000 polygons with 1-2 samples/pixel.

Both render at about 4mins/frame (the shivan flyby used motion blur..or did for about the first 3 seconds)

I wouldnt bother spending the cash unless you are going to use it professionaly though.  A single processor AthlonXP 1800+ wouldnt be *THAT* much slower, and you can still plug 1gb+ RAM into it.

To be honest, you'll be pretty dissapointed with non-specialised apps performance.
