Play it, it's pretty interesting actually. There are lots of neat tricks which you don't see in other FPS games, and they help keep the game fresh. Walking on walls, variable centers of gravity, portals etc. ood atmosphere, good characters, good gameplay - if what I've seen in the demo is representative of the fulll game, it's going to be a memorable one.

List of mirrors over yonder (I recommend FileFront).

I tried this yesterday and had this impression:

The story setting was nice although I can't really identify with the cherokee feel. Everything in the bar area functioned which I found quite suprising as it was the attention to detail that made it more than just another Doom 3 engine clone. That said all that went out of the window once you reach the alien craft. From there on it's colorful alien tech with little functionality, a lot of relying on doors that are "off" and so on. I did enjoy seeing all the horrible things that were being done to the humans although I didn't realise that we were being abducted on quite that scale. Also there were some aliens which didn't seem to quite fit in. The earlier little creatures you encounter and the larger lizards a little later on seem a bit random. It'd be rather like having Gorden Freeman run through Black Mesa only to find himself suddenly savaged by a dog.. quite randomly.

I hate the gravity stuff.

It starts out neat, very impressive and quite smooth to operate - but I don't like to think in more than one perspective and it constantly keeps you wondering if you're going the right way - which way is up etc.

All in all, it's good and I'd quite like to play it some more. But it reminds me a hell of a lot of Quake 4 and the platformy/puzzle bits are a pain.

Oh, I forgot to mention that while some of the weapons are cool, they don't feel like they have any real "oomph" to them.

  • huh?.. Who?.. hey you kids, git off me lawn!
i liked the gravity stuff, it's different, to be sure, unconventional, definitely, but hell, it would be funky to play in multiplayer.

as for the story, pretty nice so far, and the auditory bit of 'don't fear the reaper' just as all hell breaks loose brought a smile to my face, definitely more gameplay than i expected, too, even for a demo.

in case of emergency, administer caffeine to the artist,
he will become docile after that,

You say funky, but don't you just mean confusing?

i'm sure descent was a little confusing for some, too, sure it's confusing, but hell, i applaud it for having a level design that is unconventional

The variable gravity and walking on walls stuff sounds very interesting, reminds me of an old UT map I used to like a lot. I'll try this demo later today.

After playing the demo my conclusion is as follows: Quake 4 rip-off.

Oh pfffft to you, sir! Pffft I say.

Just because it uses the Doom3 engine, and has generally run-of-the-mill FPS gameplay. By that logic, 90% of all shooters made in the past decade are Quake and Half-Life rip-offs. If it has a decent story, interesting characters and a few interesting gameplay innovations, all of which appear to be present, that's good enough for me.

Exactly my thoughts Fury, because in Quake 4 you could totally leave your body and shoot people with spiritual arrows and change gravity and stuff. I loved that part of Quake 4. I hate the way Prey just ripped off Quake 4's seamless portal technology, too. Damn you, Human Head Studios!

...Seriously though, this is the first genuinely interesting sci fi FPS I've played for years. The game just reeks of style.

Shouldn't that be Quake 4 rips off preys portal tech, considering how long prey was around?

If Prey can see the light of day, I suppose there might be hope for Duke Nukem Forever.

Everyone who's killed themselves shooting through a portal just to see if it would work, raise you hand.

See. It is innovative.

I tried to freeze myself. :)

Also clubing enemies with wrenches = fun, that and watching those machines poke holes through people.

And really, isn't Doom 3 just a Doom 2 ripoff, which is a Doom 1 ripoff, which is a Wolfenstein ripoff...you get the picture?

 That's just like that DOM-Escher UT map! I have to try this game out now. I hope some site other than Gamespot has it up now though; I tried Gamespot earlier and got fed up with the 56k-like download speeds.

I think everyone did that with that portal. The human mind is like a moth to a scientifically nonsensical flame. Plus it's just damn cool.

If Prey can see the light of day, I suppose there might be hope for Duke Nukem Forever.
No, because 3D Realms aren't the ones developing Prey in its current incarnation. They did the original design some years ago, then forgot about it for a while and then handed it over to Human Head Studios.

Shouldn't that be Quake 4 rips off preys portal tech, considering how long prey was around?
