An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
Comes from this post in the freespace wiki project forum where aldo found something neat and questioned why it was even there.
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,40926.new.html#new
And of course he posted what he found here on the wiki.
http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Reconstruction-era_campaign_ideas
Pretty much goes like this posted from the wiki....

Earth: The Ongoing Fury

Description: The GTVA thought that Earth was lost to subspace; they were wrong: Basically, the idea is that Sol is accessible to the GTVA via the Shivan Nebula; the newly-formed Terranovan Confederation must defend Earth at all costs. The Campaign is a prelude to Reconuqest of Earth in the Post-Capella ideas.

It's a great campaign idea that would pretty much be about the unkown war with earth the gta or pvn would have never known about. Probably would have several failed attempts at contacting the gta or pvn(as the knossos wasn't powered up then or possibly the gtva not even formed yet). The campaign would most likely end with earth sealing up the node to the shivan nebula.
Great campaign idea that i certainly can't tackle as i can't fred. But for those who find it interesting in the least :)

Re: An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
My question to that is why in the world would there be a super-long-range jump node to Earth from the Shivan Nebula? Look at the nodemap, those systems are on opposite sides of GTVA space!

That means very little to be honest. The map of GTVA space is not at all similar to  to a map of real space.

Alpha Centauri, Sirius and Denb are all very close to each other but although the first two are close to Sol (4.3 and 8.6 LY away) Deneb is 1600 LY from Sol. Furthermore Sirius is closer to Sol than Alpha Centauri (The distance between the two is 9.5 LY).

So I see no good reason why there couldn't be a Sol - Nebula node

When naming star systems :v: probably just opened a book on astronomy and picked systems that had interesting names. Apart from the problem with Capella having too few stars that seems to have worked out quite well for them :)

Re: An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
Ridiculous. If there was a Nebula > Sol Node, the Shivans would have noticed it and Jumped to Sol and Attacked it or Supernova'd it right away to eliminate the human "threat". Also, this theory tends to step all over the toes of the EA backstory that Inferno and S:AH have set up. It's nice to try to play along with what some other cool campaigns have told, if they were good.

**** what Inferno and S:AH say. It's his campaign and he can do whatever he likes with it. I cenrtainly have no intention of altering MindGames to fit in with their ideas even though I enjoy both campaigns.

Secondly it's canon that nodes can form and disappear on their own. The formation of a new node to the nebula could be the direct result of the destruction of the Sol-Delta Serpentis node.

Re: An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
Suppose a Sol-Capella node was what was created by the supernova? ;)

Re: An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
Hmmm.  [he says, quirking an eyebrow in consideration]  Could a supernova propogate through a subspace corridor?

... No.  That wouldn't make sense.  The way they managed to destroy subspace nodes has been to have a powerful explosion inside them.  Therefore, a supernova explosion propagating through a node would cause it to collapse.  Maybe some of the explosion would leak through, but surely not enough to be more than a suped-up nuclear explosion.  Nothing big enough to threaten a planet, let alone a star system.

... wait a minute.  I see where you are going with that.

Whoa.  Creepy thought, that.  But how would those Sathani get out of the Sol system once they had wiped out whatever Terrans and Vasudans were left in the system?  Blow up Sol?

Re: An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
Keep in mind this is more like a "what if" campaign dealing with a sol-nebula node that's not on the nodemap because it was an undiscovered node which does happen in freespace. Such as the knossos was undiscovered until bosh found it, but this isn't dealing with a knossos, just an unfound node in sol.

Re: An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
Could be a recently activated Knossos-esqe device that just created a new Sol node..

Well, i guess i could buy it if it were a newly formed node..

Re: An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
**** the knossos! I'm tired of people using that as an excuse to make a node somewhere. A knossos is sort of really bogus at times. Instead of a knossos, why can't it be a plain old uncharted node that was like hidden somewhere normal people wouldn't find? That's plausible to, since knossoses seem to have that nature as they are hidden from sensors and undiscovered until powered up. Seriously, **** a knossos. It reminds me of a huge rotating ****ring that spits out millions of ships when used as an excuse.
Hmmm yes a newly formed node would fly a lot better than knossos madness :D

Re: An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
While I'm not quite as vitriolic about the idea I'd find the idea of a Knossos portal in Sol a little hard to buy given how heavily populated and explored that system must have been.

Then again most people don't appreciate how big a star system really is.

Re: An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
Star systems are very spread out. Not to mention the suns gravity field extends well past pluto by a lot(you could do an insystem jump well past pluto if you wished). In a heavily populated system i would imagine people spend most of their time at all the planets in sol, if not in orbit arount them, or commuting to another planet. After that you have empty space which is just uninteresting. Idk, a newly formed node in the outreaches of the system could be plausible.

Why on Earth would :v: decide that humanity renamed all the stars to names of existing stars and then have no one mention it in the game? That's just beyond strange. :wtf:

Re: An interesting reconstruction era campaign idea
Maybe in a future update of the main campaign, the designers could insert the "true" colors for the stars, if they are incorrect, and in the case of Capella, add couple more suns.
