Disabling auto subsystem targeting
Haven't played FS in years, so I had forgotten how much this annoys me.

Every time you target a ship larger than a fighter, cargo, sentry, etc. in Freespace Retail or Open Source Project, subsystem targeting will be automatically activated.  That's all well and good, because most of the time you end up wanting to go after a specific subsystem before taking the whole thing down.

However, there are many situations where it causes headaches.  For example: scanning larger ships.  If you have a subsystem targeted, your ship needs to be pointed towards that subsystem in order to scan.  Often this can cause difficulty if you are being chased at the same time (e.g. "Playing Judas").  When subsystems aren't targeted, scanning is much simpler.  Just point at any part of the ship.

Also, if you are doing Hull shots with Tsunamis, it is very hard to lock on when a specific subsystem is targeted.  Same case as above.

So more often than not, I find myself pressing Alt-S in order to disable subsystem targeting.  The problem is, as soon as you change targets, it re-enables!!!

Is there any way to change this through table editing, etc?  I was unable to find anything useful in the documentation.

Or maybe I'm the only person who is annoyed by this?  Haha, probably.

Anyways, thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: Disabling auto subsystem targeting
Well, when you're pounding away at a capship with a bomber and cyclopses and stuff or any bomb for that matter, if you don't have subsystem targeting enabled, your bombs just target a turret and lock on anyway(turrets and subsystem targetting are similar since you have to cycle through multiples of each on a ship). Otherwise i can tell you'd like the prospect of helios mines to lay near a capship hull or dumbfire helioses.
Idk, you do present a good complaint, i do have that problem when you have to scan the lucifer and the demon. It automatically targets a subsystem on the front end of the demon and i have to go all the way to the front of the destroyer to scan it which gets me too close to a sentry and i lose the mission.
Yeah changing autosubsystem targetting from on by default would be extremely useful. I'll shutup now, but dumbfire helioses or helios mines would be awesome.
Every pilot's goal is to rise up in the ranks and go beyond their purpose to a place of command on a very big ship. Like the colossus; to baseball bat everyone.

Re: Disabling auto subsystem targeting
Alt & S would be my reccomendation, But you already know about it, I havent bothered looking through the control config EVER as the default FS keyboard config has been my staple diet since the FS1 demo. Any options in there to perchance disable it permanently? :)
