What the hell... that's creepy. Every bloody time. No interaction for it to work from either.

[Edit] One thing I did notice now is the symbols are not unique, but appear several times and in a specific pattern every time. So it's just math making sure that the possible outcomes match the right symbol... but still, it's creepy

Ok, got it. Try checking which location the symbol it displays are found. It's the same every time. The math bit on the prior page is simply the means to reduce the number possible outcomes to the point where it's not obvious that you're covering them all every time. No magic

Ok, here's the thing:

It doesn't just ask you to pick a number, it asks you to pick a 2 digit number, add the two digits together, then subtract them from the original number. Think about it for a sec. What is 11-2? 9. 12-3? 9. 13-4? 9... see where this is going? It goes from 90 possible outcomes from a 2 digit number before the math bit, to 9 possible outcomes after. And all these 9 are covered by the same symbol, meaning a 100% success rate.

The do hide it well by randomizing the symbol it displays between runs, which threw me off for about a minute at first. But the thing to notice is that while the symbol changes, the pattern is exactly the same every time. Try this - Think of the number 40, so 40-4 makes 36, and see what symbol you get... the one at 36, right? Then think of the number 99, 99-18 makes 81, and that will indeed show up.

But now try comparing the symbol displayed at 36 with the one at 81, and you'll see In fact, try comparing with the symbols at any number divisable by 9... they're all identical, and those numbers are the only possible outcomes from the math bit on the prior page.

Test it out simply by using the same number again and again. Then try another number, try that a few times. Pattern starts to emerge! Suddenly it doesnt look so amazing anymore. But I was definitely like WTF when I first did it.

I picked .23 and it got it wrong. In fact, they didn't even have a symbol for -4.77! And they never said the number had to be a positive integer. Just two digits.

I've seen something similar before, take the last two digits from the year you were born, now add them to your age, the result

if you've had your birthday already this year it will will 106, if not it will be 105

A digit is a symbol used in numeral system... These symbols are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.  Combinations of the digits represent numbers that are bigger (or more negative!) than 9, or are not integers.

It's as simple as this - a digit is to numbers what a letter is to words.

Last two digits of 1982 are 8 and 2. So it would be 82, and if you are 24, that adds up to 106.

Of course, this doesn't work if you are more than 105 years old.
