Philips CDRW460 not working...
Following my recent virus I've decided to reinstall my CDRW and backup everything I need onto CD. (It wasnt installed before because I didn't have a use for it at the time). I've hooked it up as it should be but for some reason I can't quite work out it won't read any CD placed in the drive. It has power and the computer has detected it... have I missed something here? any help is most welcome.

hmm...that happened to me once.  I had to reinstall windows to get it to work again (lost some important DLL files).

I wouldn't know what to look for though - everything seems ok, but when I put a CD in the drive it simply doesn't admit it's there... it acts like it's not got a CD in the drive.

aaaah..The stupid dutch philips CDRW-burners it's a pitty you bought it because i worked at a pc store i sold 10 of these in a month and i got 8 back ( and it's in almost every store that get Philips burners back ) because they don't work. And a friend of mine has one and can only burn TraxData CD's and no other cd type.

If you have a good warent you shoukd go back where you bought it and change it for a Creative or a Plextor CDRW-Burner they are topnotch. As for the problem you have, i woulden't know need more data about it.

I assume your regular CD drive works fine with the burner installed? Try taking the CD Drive out, and set the burner as Secondary Master. Some drives just refuse to be slaved to another drive. If it works then, just set your other drive as the slave.

The regular DVD drive works fine as it always have, I'll try playing with the master/slave settings on it but I think it can do both (since it has the option to be a master or a slave).

It worked on my old system, was able to write to any CD and was generally a fine CD writer - I had no complaints with it. Why it should stop now is beyond me.
