Classic Trek to get a make over!?
According to this article http://tv.ign.com/articles/730/730321p1.html CBS is planning to give classic trek the 21st century treatment. Hidef remastered from film source and effects modernization... CGI style. I reserve judgement till when it begins airing Sept 16th.

I think CBS is taking a might huge risk here, playing the Lucas act. So much room for error, but at the same time can be quite a makeover to behold. Thoughts people?

Are they nuts? The goofy "effects" are much of the shows charm. And how would my mind handle the shock when taken from a shiny CGI scene to a bridge made out of cardboard? Nothing good will come out of this, mark my words.

I'm in two minds... Lets think back to the DS9 episode where they travelled back and revisited "The Trouble With Tribbles" shall we? It actually worked... it was a really popular episode and although they remastered the Enterprise etc. it all looked like it fitted in quite nicely.

If they take that route and don't screw with any of the plot etc. then they might make it quite pleasently remastered. But they could easily push it the other way and lose the charm (as Prophet says) - I quite like the obviously crap models and the entire bridge crew "pretending" to be thrown off their feet when a torpedo hits etc.

This could work if they only alter certain stuff. Exterior shots, and other ships like the planet killer and the Romulan scout would be nice to see in updated glory. The interior, and the dodgey aliens (par example, The Companion) should be left as-is.

Heard about this not too long ago, and I for one actually look forward to see what they do with it. I mean, who here can honestly say they didn't like the ultra-retro look of the USS Defiant in 'In a Mirror, Darkly'? There, you had a ship aesthetically designed in the freakin' 60's that actually looked more advanced technologically than the NX-01!

Here's a sample I came across:

Re: Classic Trek to get a make over!?
it'd be nice if they just brought a little more clarity in the special effects, and did the CG models to bring them up to the kinds of detail seen in most treks to date.

i thought this part was nicely done, little touches like that were nice..

The first one sucked. Second looked much better. But I think Okuda effects work will PWN any fan attempt at this.

Re: Classic Trek to get a make over!?
I'm quite interested to see how this will turn out. When it comes down to it, the problem with the Star Wars remake wasn't so much the special effects as the fact that Lucas started playing around with the entire storyline. I don't see them being that stupid with Star Trek, if they just update the effects but leave all the dialogue etc exactly as it was, it could actually be great to see. If they start adding CGI non-space scenes to 'enhance the experience' or 'increase continuity' etc, it could turn into a pile of poo, but hopefully they won't do that.

I hated that episode. Don't get me wrong, the CGI things were nice, but another time-travel episode? And worst of all, the butchering of hte klingon past with that ridge thing.. ACK!!!!

Anyway, I allways considered TOS more of a comedy than anything else. Me and my roommate would laugh and laugh at the corny dialogue, redicolous plot, crappy acting and hilarious effects. I allmost chocked from laughing a few times! TOS RULEZ!!!!!

Re: Classic Trek to get a make over!?
If they do this tastefully and correctly, which it (preliminarily) sounds like they're trying to do, then it could be a really amazing thing to see.  Like Mefustae said, seeing the Constitution-class in full CGI in Enterprise's "In a Mirror, Darkly" was something else; I'll be all for it if this is how it turns out.  However, if they go the Lucas route...God save their souls, because Trekkies sure won't.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Re: Classic Trek to get a make over!?
my inner cynic is telling me that the only reason why the peeps are paramount want to do this is because they have no other trek to make, so they'll just go back to the first and add a modern polish to it.
