Logitech Wingman Extreme is prtty good if you dont like FF....
fits nice, got enough buttons, throttle, twistable handle, and its fiarly stable (you dont have to put you hand on it when you move the stick to keep the base from moving)

I'm perfectly satisfied with my Sidewinder Prescision Pro (optical sensors, etc) - it's got a lot of buttons, configurable, and it's fairly reliable.

a Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital 3D here, it might not be the best but it was fairly cheap and it gets the job done. The only gripe I have with it is that its one button short of being able to have all the vital FS controls (for me anyway) in easy reach without having to reach for the keyboard. That and the fact that on mine the twist handle is a tad dirty meaning that its over sensitive but other than those its great.

Depends on how much you're willing to shell out. If you REALLY want to spend, get one of the Thrustmaster HOTAS setups, which includes a stick, a throttle, and rudder pedals. Fully programmable buttons too. Those are expensive, though- I personally recommend the cheaper MS Precision Pro 2.
It's worked very well for me.

Allow me to second this. Thrustmaster. All the way. Don't even consider anything else. When I say Thrustmaster, I don't mean that cheezy Top Gun game stick they sell. I'm talking about a Thrustmaster F16-FLCS w/ F16-TQS stick-and-throttle combo. Better yet, go for the F22-Pro with F16-FLCS. If you can't find the old one's, there's the Cougar stick and throttle coming out early next year: true Thrustmaster HOTAS design, all metal construction and easily the most completely programmable sim hardware ever made.

Yeah, you pay more for Thrustmaster, but they last forever and a day. I've been using the same stick and throttle for all my sim needs for the last 8yrs. I've got a heavy hand and I abuse this gear, but it holds up. If I were to use a flimsy Sidewinder or Wingman or Cyborg, I'd be replacing my gear every six months.

Or in shorter, simpler terms: Thrustmaster HOTAS gear is the best sim hardware you can get. Period. You'll never regret the purchase.

Well, I got a Logitech Wingman Force in Singapore for only 79 dollars. It came with the OEM version of FreeSpace 1 too.  

So far, I think its pretty cool. I downloaded the latest drivers from their web site and I found that it has FreeSpace 2 profiles in it, so assigning or binding commands to the joystick buttons was very easy.

Did I mention that it is force feedback enabled?

allthough Saitek X45 looks quite yummy too  

it's too bad that they don't sell those throttle handles separately   (or even make ones that are inserted to the USB port individually)

It's all in the handling. ou can't choose a joystick by listening to other peoples, it's really a question of tastes, of how is your hand, and of what you want and need. My only advice is to go to a store, an online game cafe or anything, and try as many as you can, that way, you'll find the one you'll really like.

Check out Suncom. They make a two axis throttle add on that uses a keyboard pass through. They are, as I recall, inexpensive and durable, but not as versatile as the Thrustmaster. The Suncom does, however, have the advantage of working with pretty much any stick out there.

Absolutely. Its a pass-through connector: your keyboard plugs into one side and then the whole thing plugs into your computer. Older Thrustmaster joysticks used the same basic design (though they had the keyboard plug into the stick and then the stick plugged into the keyboard port).

I just use a Gravis blackhawk digital and keyset manager rocks too, you can bind all sorts of keys outside of freespace it's a pity it's not force feedback
