Hmm, If you want to model and make good renders you'll need Lightwave or 3DS Max...

First of all:

      Welcome to the HLPBB!!!!!!!
You've come to the right place to learn - that's what we're all about.

Personally, I use Rhino3D to model, and trueSpace to texture and render. The I use Photoshop for post-render effects, like text, beams and engine glows.

EDIT: Once you learn (if you learn) Rhino, see my siggy for a nice tutorial. {/p1mp}

America, stand assured that Israel truly understands what you are going through.

Know how to use Rhino3D? Want to put your ships into Freespace 2? You've come to the right place!

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

That's another possibility. I used to do beams that way in my early TS1 renders. But somehow it doesn't look really good when I do the same thing in TS4.

Looks at all the people around...
You guys look as if you've just seen a ghost.

I use Truespace 1.0 because im not into buying stuff, although im purchasing Lunarcell because its priced sensibly. How did you create beams in Truespace 1.0?

Photoshop had a too big price tag and a too big download. So im sticking with PSP7, Illusion for my explosions and Truespace/blender for texturing and modeling.

Good point - how do you blend explosions into renders? I never could get just one explosion graphic (as opposed to an entire animation).

ANIVIEW32, save frame as... , paste as new layer, screen blending mode.

Here's a explosion, created in illusion. Illusion though has animation program but if your good with the print screen button you can get a good one at the right moment.

alpha blending.

Id recommend you do some research...these kind of renders dont come easy and it will take you some amount of months to learn how to use these packages.

On the upside...if you're very good you can earn a comfortable living out of doing this sort of stuff (most of it is boring TV transitions/commercial work though)

------------------
have you ANY idea of how much trouble you're in?
assault on a police officer.
Theft of police property.
Illegal possesion of a firearm.
FIVE counts of attempted murder.
That comes to...

twenty-nine dollars and 14 cents.
cash, cheque or credit card?

my trick is, setting the render as the background and adding the explosion, playing it and print-screening at the moment you want the bang. Once i add beams and get some engines glows though, i might be able to turn that into a half-decent render.

Well lets start from the begining:

You'll need a decent computer to render, which would have to be better then mine.
Recommended Specs
- PIII 450+/Athlon/Duron
- 64MB+ Ram
- 16MB/32MB Graphics
Note: (It is wise to have 24bit/32bit Monitor Support and Resolution support for 800*600 or above)

I would recommend Truespace5, because 3D Studio Max or LightWave 7 are more for designing and editing high end meshes. For post render fx I use Adobe Photoshop 6 but you can try Paint Shop Pro 7 if you can not get a hold of Ps6.

Now you can check out Kazaa but they got rid of the search function so you'll have to try using the desktop search. If you can't get Ps6 or Ts5 off Kazaa you can d/l the trial version from adobe and caligari

Well once you got that sorted out just post a reply saying so and I'll give you some links to awesome tutorials that will help enormously.
