Well, i've been struggling with particles and volumetrics and various plug-ins to make decent backdrops, and now i've finally made one.

Lighting and stuff leaves a little to be desired, maybe i'll make a real render out of it someday (hope i don't forget).

Agh - the stars! the stars! lol - no, the nebula is sweet, but you've got to composite the stars better. Actually, first, you need to get a wider variety in the brightness of the stars. There's tons and tons of ways to do starfields, and I'm actually working on a tutorial for all-photoshop nebulae that contains a way to do starfields, and how to composite them.

Looks good (mostly), keep it up!

Wow, dude.   There are a few things you could improve but that's truly a top-notch effort. My congrats!   Keep working on it.

Looks more like a big explosion than a nebula.
WE ARE HARD LIGHT PRODUCTIONS. YOU WILL LOWER YOUR FIREWALLS AND SURRENDER YOUR KEYBOARDS. WE WILL ADD YOUR INTELLECTUAL AND VERNACULAR DISTINCTIVENESS TO OUR OWN. YOUR FORUMS WILL ADAPT TO SERVICE US. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

Thats because it's completely separate from the stars - it just "stops" and doesn't appear to "connect" with them. That said it looks really cool - Kinda like an Illusion explosion

It's all done in MAX. The only time Photoshop came in contact with it is when i convert from BMP to JPG.

EDIT:Oh, and no illusion or anything. Just plug-ins for MAX.
And Zylon... The suspense is killing you isn't it?

Yeah, maybe a 6-10 min rendertime. And the light within the Nebula are Raytraced. *i'm sure that improved the rendering time *

hhey, Ryx: could you make somes for me, diffrenet varients in colour and shapes (and if you can, "texture"), w/o background (no star, nothing, just black), and send them my way? They would make neat background effects for OtT (and if steak does some for me, I'll have a really great looking collection   )

A PCloud particle system with 130, or so particles, 2 omni lights and some helpers that came with AfterBurn (hint). I'm not very good at it, but things are beginning to come together.

Note: this pic is slightly different from the original scene!

any size and resoltution will do. I'll use 512*512 maps in 256 colours ingame, but I could use better sets for renders (if you allow me to, of course).
I should learn to do that too, but I'm too busy with models, to be honest.
oh, you can send them at [email protected]
