Too expensive. Have you checked the price-tag for ITER, lately? Slaves & exercycle generators ftw.

Soon this teenager will be offered a job (kidnapped) by the US Govt to keep his mouth shut about something like this.

Doubtfully. Now if he had managed to get a fusion reaction that gave out more energy than it consumed, now that would make it more likely :p
That and the experiment he did has been known for decades. Still, big kudos to him for pulling off something like this in the basement of his home :)

not gonna happen, not possible

but if you look at the fusion reactor of our solar system (Sun) then well, loads of energy == easy

Its possible.  Look at the sun (with a visor on, hopefully), and you will see the possibilities.  And reality.

"Originally, he wanted to build a hyperbaric chamber," she said, adding that she promptly said no. But, when he came asking about the nuclear fusion machine, she relented.

Kid: "Ma, I wanna build a hyperbaric chamber."

Mom: "What's that, dear?"

Kid: "Gosh, Ma, do I have to explain everything to you? If you don't know what something is, you Google or Wikipedia it!"

Mom: {mumbling} "Isn't he pretentious..." :-/

Kid: "What's that word mean, patenshis?"

Mom: "...Google it."

Kid: "Heehee..."

{parental research break}

Mom: "Now wait just a minute! You want to to build a box with pure oxygen at levels of pressure many times higher than our atmosphere, inside the house? We just finished painting!"

Kid: "But Mommmm-"

Mom: "No, I absolutely forbid it! Don't ask again."

Kid: "Gosh, well how about a nuclear fusion device then?"

Mom: "Ok."

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Re: can you spell: Unlimited ammounts of free energy forever?
kind of reminds me of chris hahn...the guy who built a fission reactor in his moms toolshed?
didnt suceed, but produced enough radiation to get the shed declared a superfund site...

anyhow, not possible on the scales done here on earth....youd need a lot of gas in order to take advantage of gravity, which is what compresses the gas in the sun to the point where it undergoes a fusion reaction...otherwise you have to put A LOT of energy into the d--n thing.

technically, you could replace the electrons in the deuterium with muons or tauons in order to decrease the distance between the nuclei of the deuterium atoms, but those are extremely unstable...

however, SHOULD someone find a [energy efficient] way to keep muons from decaying to electrons in 1/5700th of a second, then efficient fusion would be within our grasp....
*scurries off with pencil and paper to start puzzling over it*

It's actually been done, but the amount more is infinitesmal, so it's not worth it.
