Operation Flashpoint!

Ghost Recon appears to be good, maybe I'll buy it someday
It came from outer space! What? Dunno, but it's going back on the next flight!

Call me strange, but I prefer IW2 to FS2...
But Operation Flashpoint is a very good sim.
 But RTCW still kicks

No way strange! But that said, I think I've been tainted by FS... I can't seem to enjoy IW2 as much

Different game style... different handling feel on the ships... different universe. I understand why you don't love it like you do FS

One of the strengths of Iwar2 is that it doesn't need Shivans. The game rocks hard without some bizarre unknowable enemy.

On the other hand, who knows what lurks in the minds of Modders? I hope someone creates a credible enemy and mods it in and develops that enemy to something we can fear and hate--and see a just enough humanity in to make it credible.

I'll tell you why FS2 captured my imagination so much more than IW2 did.

The story.  The story in IW2 is over and done with at the end of the game, the one in FS2 can be taken in a million different directions.  That is why FS2 is superior to IW2.  You can take the FS2 story and run with it, something you cannot easily do with the IW2 story.

Well, FS2 has better beams as well, and FRED2.  But those are of secondary concern.

Yeah, FS2 plot is better, but using the Iwar2 engine, you'll be able to do so much more dude
Oh, and FS2 has Fred, but Iwar2 will have the SDK...   at Interplay

*** SPOILER for IWAR2 ***

Venom, I know about the aliens. They're not the overarching threat that the Shivans are. That role is filled by the corporations and marauders, who are all (at least notionally) human.

Shrike, I have to disagree about the story between FS and Iwar2. IW has characters. FS has... um... mission chatter. People actually dislike Jafs because he talks too much and he's slow. No one cares about any other character in a FS mission--except that one undercover agent that acts as your superior when you're acting as a pilot for the NTF.

The reason that Freespace's story can go anywhere is that it wasn't finished (thanks Interplay). Volition left us with a cliffhanger and no overall resolution. Fans have filled that gap. Particle Systems, on the other hand, puts the whole story in one package. With mods, players can still extend the game, adding storylines, etc.

I'll probably eventually reinstall FS, but I dont' think I'll be uninstalling IW2 anytime soon.

Hem, at least, put a spolier aloert like that:

**** alert, Iwar2 spoiler!!!****

If you think the aliens in iwar2 aren't misterious, I don't know what you need
But I reckon they're quite disapointing. First time you see them, sure, it's "WOW, kickA$$!!!", but, honestly, they don't make a good dogfight... They frightened me, which is good, and i'm still afraid of coming too close, but they're really too easy to kill, only thing is to have an AM weapon.

Exactly. The aliens aren't a credible threat. The real threat, the real evil is the corps, especially old Caleb Maas. The game gets by more on human evil than on mysterious aliens bent on destruction.

Well, there you have the two ends of IW and FS. Mik, your criticism of the FS2 characters is well placed - FS2 improved on FS1 but still left its characters (at least, the ones you fly with) pretty much nameless. I can see how IW2 fills this gap, but I realise that us modders can create our own storylines in FS2, seemingly, much easier. But that's because I have so much more experience with this universe.

That comes down to familiarity. Most of the HLP modders are very clear on the FS universe: its where many of us live good portions of our lives!

On the other hand, a good author will be able to work his ideas into either or both universes, adjusting them to fit. In another thread, I mentioned a possiblity of doing a new campaign for Iw2 based around some of the events of Peter Hamilton's Reality Dysfunction series. In reality, this proposed storyline would work in either universe if you pushed it around a bit to accomodate the mission handling structure of the engines.

The SOC Loop missions, with Snipes, were some of the best ever. Snipes was cool. Heck, Rah'Torh even built up an impressive postcount in his name

But IW2 comes through as the true winner in that competition.

Oh, and an on-topic note - I played the I76 demo. Liked it. Figured I82 would improve on it. Bought it. Well, it didn't.
