greetings from germany if you not already figured out

im here in need of some help:

was 3 days ago that i cleaned up my room and found the original GERMAN retail versions of FS1 and FS2 (dimension pack)!
what great games i thought, but then remembered that i actually never played FS2 due to grafic problems.
searching a patch to fix that i ended up here and all the linked pages.  wow cool open source *happy*
after reading a lot about everything i decided to download both games in ENGLISH.
after seeing the bandwith i abolished this attempt ... 

but hey, do i not already have most of the files? so i kept on searching the forums for "german version" etc.
well obviously i was not lucky and ended up posting this ^^
i want to play both games again IN ENGLISH and for sure both with the new features (FS1 port and FS2 with new gfx and snd)

so big questions now

1) is it possible to convert my FS1 and FS2 versions to english ?
2) and which files will i still have to download for this and FS port and FSopen then?

IIRC, the only thing that you need are the VP's with the missions and the tables, which should be the root vp. As those are the only things in English (Besides sound files, of course).  (well, actually on second thought, the interface files will still be in german, but as you read below, its not a problem)

In any case, the SCP works with the German release just fine. It's the same executable, just the supporting files (predominantly the interface files, which are graphic images, and not text based) are in german, rather than english. So, you could simply, over time, download the SCP components and use them with your german release and it should work without a problem.

If you DL the SCP executables, the launcher, and the main mediaVP, it should work.

what about the cutscenes? just download the new *.ogg files ?
intallation like written in the SCP installation guide ?

You can simply copy the MVE files off the CDs and into your main FS2 folder to have them work.

He can run the Open Installer (now with a working GUI!) and just get the .ogg files, which are smaller.

Yes. But if he wants retail in english he can't. But in any case, I dont keep up with the 17 installers out there, since I have the 3 disks, still...

If you're going to install the SCP, then you can use my installer, and select the .ogg cutscene section (in addition to the core files, and other stuff.)

uh   
somehow i think i dont get everything,  or i lack the ability of combining the answers
ill try to make it clear again:

i want to play FS1 and FS2 (both with all the new features)
i have the retail cds here but they are german (i would like to play both in english)
when i follow all these installers and guides out there will my versions be converted to english?
i would like to download just the necessary files and use as much of what i already have on cd

so who can tell me what to do best ?

If  you already have some files, simply get the windows installer in my sig, run FreeSpaceOpenUpdater.exe, and give it your freespace2 directory, then select "All Sections" and "Yes to All". Then sit back and let it do the work. It won't download anything you already have in the correct location.

download fs2 and scp the latest version in english, run the setup, choose the game mods you want, let it install should take around 30 40 minutes, run the thing .

the mods include.
fsport
sync
transcend
jad
jad2
fow part 1 (not sure on that)

other mods, include media vp updates.

where did u find that download? on of the "official ftps" ? (dont have a torrentprog running, sent me PM if you have a fast link)
dunno if its because of my location, but my downloadrates are rather low
otherwise i would have done that already .... approximate time i think is 6 hours

If you're using the updater, which is in the .zip file I pointed you to earlier, Hunter's hosting most of the larger files, and his servers are in the US. That might be the problem.

You have two choices:
1. you can not install your FS2, and just use the Installer.
2. you can install you FS2, then use the Updater.

#1 I can guarantee that you'll have a straight english version.
#2 should be slightly faster, and I'm ALMOST positive that you'll have a straight english version.

your choice.
