OT - Drunk Driving poem
This was a poem that was circulating through the net years and years ago. I really like it, and if anyone can tell me to whom the credit goes, I'd be much obliged.

Quote
I went to a party, mom, I remember what you said.
You told me not drink, mom,  so I drank pop instead.
It felt so good so inside, mom, just like you said it would.
I didn't drink and drive, mom, even though some said I could.
I know I did the right thing, mom, I know you're always right.
Now the party's over, mom, and they're driving out of sight.
As I got into my car, mom, I knew I'd make it in one piece.
Because of the way you raised me , mom, responsible and sweet.
I started to drive away, mom, but as I pulled into the road,
the other car didn't see me, mom, and hit me like a load.
As I lay there on the pavement, mom, I hear the policeman say,
the other guy was drunk, mom, now I'm the one who'll pay.
I think I'm dying here, mom, I wish you'd get here soon.
How could this be me, mom, my life burst like a balloon.
There is blood all around me , mom, and all of it is mine.
I hear the medic say, mom, it's just a matter of time.
Let me just tell you, mom, I swear I didn't drink.
It was all the others, mom, the others didn't think.
He was at the same party as I, mom, the only difference is,
he's the one that drank, mom, and I'm the one that'll die.
Why do people drink, mom, it can really ruin your life.
I'm feeling the sharp pains now, they feel just like a knife.
The guy that hit me looks numb, mom, and I don't think it's fair,
I'm the one that's dying and all he can do is stare.
Tell brother not to cry, mom, tell daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven , mom, I want "Daddy's Girl" on my grave.
Someone should have told him, mom, not to drink and drive.
If only they would have told him, mom, I'd still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, mom, I'm getting very scared.
Please don't cry for me, mom, you were always there.
I have one last question, mom, before I say good bye.
I didn't drink and drive, mom, so why am I to die?

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Not anti-drinking - anti-drinking + driving. There's a world of difference. :-/

A great piece of writing there, it's a pity there are a lot of idiots out there that don't give a damn. Drinking is OK provided it's done responsibly.

Specifically, the sort of guys who go get hammered and then mow down pedestrians are the group who would care least. Never understood why all this attention was focused on the people least likely act that way...

Another one I read is similar to this...only the girl did drink and drive.  Her parents were on the way to the party she had attended.  They ended up hitting eachother and all were sent to the hospital.  She ended up killing her own parents.  The nurse didn't even have the guts to tell her that just before she herself died.

This folks is why I refuse to touch a drop of alcoholic beverages.  Not because people say I should...its because I'm scared that I'd get drunk and not even know it and take out someone's family on my way home.

You can do everthing in your power to stop something happening but its usually out of your control - Only thing you can do is don't do it to others and hope they feel the same!

Ugh, DUI's should have their liscences taken away permanantly on their first offense.  You see this all too often.  It's really saddening.

And flogged by the relatives of the people they killed.
