So I get e-mails like these every now and again, and I'm wondering if it's just some sort of fraud/spyware/whatever.. sometimes they even provide links to somewhat legitimate looking websites, and think "hey I could use a few extra hundred bucks" but then skepticism kicks in. Anyone know anything about these?

There are indeed companies that pay you for doing surveys over the Internet. Since you heard about it in an unsolicited email, however, I would recommend that you treat it with suspicion.

There are some companies willing to pay you a bit to answer survey questions, transcribe podcasts, identify objects in pictures, and answer random questions (commonly about tech, though not always).

The early days were a lot simpler. A guy in Glasgow back in the 60s, put an advert in the paper: Send me £1 and I'll tell you how to get much more back. People did. Lots of people. His £1 wisdom? He told them all to place an advert like his.
