"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Is it wrong that the first thing I thought of was BSG? Does that make me a strange, lonely introvert?

Hey, I rather enjoy political humor myself ---but the first thing that popped into my head was Roslin, too.

But it definitely was a good clip of Stewart. =D Love the Daily Show.

Am I the only one who correctly assumed it was Laura Bush?
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

Normally, I think Jon Stewart's funny.  This time, he's down to the Keith Olbermann level of stupid.  If he wasn't so blatantly misinterpreting Laura Bush's words, he'd perhaps see that they make sense.

Reserve the Bush-bashing for George; that's actually funny.

When you say  something stupid like "on TV you see the one bombing a day that discourages people" on national tv, you get what you deserve.

So what good interpretation is there then?

Iraq. It's great! We've solved all the problems there apart from that one bombing a day that discourages people and makes them think we haven't!

The reason why there is one bombing a day is because Iraq isn't at all stable. Stable countries don't have one bombing a day. They simply don't have that kind of number of terrorists in them if they are stable. Laura Bush is lying through her teeth saying that parts of Iraq are stable. It's the same stability you have when your car is teetering on a cliff and trying to decide whether to stay put or go over the edge.

Not true.  The parts of Iraq that are predominantly Kurdish are stable (0 bombins a day).  The Shiites and the Sunnis just have it out for each other.

so what would you say to the images of Iraqis giving our solders flowers and crap we got on the first day of two of the war? while I'm not going to take her position the sentiment, "you can't always accept what you see on the TV as the whole truth" I can understand.

Yeah but that wasn't her point. Her point was "You can't always believe what you hear on the news when it's saying that my husband hasn't completely ****ed things up in Iraq"

Can you seriously imagine Laura Bush appearing on TV and saying "you can't always accept what you see on the TV as the whole truth"? What if a FOX News viewer was flicking channels and caught that!  :eek2:  :shaking:

Not true.  The parts of Iraq that are predominantly Kurdish are stable (0 bombins a day).  The Shiites and the Sunnis just have it out for each other.

So in other words the whole of Iraq is unstable apart from the part that wants to secede from the nation completely and thereby almost certainly draw itself into an conflict with Turkey over the creation of a Kurdish state within Turkey?

You obviously have a different definition of stable from me. :p

Yes nothing is going on in Kurdish areas now but the entire area is likely to become a new hotspot if they ever get independence. So the fact that nothing is blowing up now is not a sign that this state of affairs will continue unless the problem is sorted out in the south of the country.

Great.

Now, can we move on to what I was actually talking about?  I would really love it if everyone who responds would stop automatically assuming that I'm Bush's mouthpiece just because I happen to be conservative, and that I'm always defending the war in Iraq.  I'm not saying Iraq is at all stable, nor am I defending lying about the current situation.

What I am on about, is that Jon Stewart wasn't funny.  In fact, all he did was take what Laura Bush said about seeing the bombings "on TV" and saying that "well, Laura, they're happening in real life too!" Honestly, that's just screams no ****, Sherlock, and I frankly think that Laura Bush knows that the bombings are happening in real life too.

...Which is why they might want to split Iraq into three countries... or maybe three semi-independent states.  I mean, if they really can't get along...

Actually, a federal republic would work just fine.  No splitting necessary.

When you say  something stupid like "on TV you see the one bombing a day that discourages people" on national tv, you get what you deserve.

Kosh, I've got some advice:  jump off the unnecessary Bush-bashing bandwagon.  Bash for when he truly deserves it, not just because some TV comedian gets on and plays around with his wife's words until they say what we wants them to say to get a good laugh out of people.

The problem is that Laura Bush's words do not make sense. The fact is that TV can't convey just how **** it is to live in Iraq. If anything the situation there is worse than the images on TV make it appear to be. You can claim all you like that I'm attacking you as a Bush mouthpiece. The simple fact is that I'm having a go at you cause you were wrong.

And? Since when did the fact that a politician says something that can be deliberately misinterpreted mean that you couldn't do so? Everyone knows that Laura Bush knows that the explosions are real. The point is that by trivialising the problem and claiming that it's just a case of one bombing a day rather than a grass roots hatred of Americans, Shiites and anyone else the terrorists don't like she opened herself up to much deserved lampooning.

If you didn't find it funny that's your choice but don't ever try to claim that she made sense cause it's pretty obvious to anyone who follows the news that if anything she's underplaying how bad things are.
