There were underlying causes. The riots were just the most immediate cause. Both countries had nationalistic military governments that didn't have a problem with hating each other, and the real tension was caused by Honduras expelling Salvadoran workers and settlers after they did some land reform.

It's like saying the only cause of World War I was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
