Sorta not OT: Messaging programs
I know everyone uses ICQ (which I think is stupid, do you know how many explots there are for it?!?) but what alternatives are there? I quite like Yahoo Messenger. It's a lot more user friendly.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

They all suck.

I just use ICQ because I'm used to it. The newer versions, post-AOL, are so hideous I always try to schedule any meetings on IRC.

theres MSNMS, if you have a Hotmail account or a msn passprot its easy to set up...
only a 5 meg download for the latest methinks....
and its useful as hell...
tells you if you have any new messages in your Hotmail account so you dont have to wait for the slow assed page to load....

I was using ICQ99b (which is much better than 2000 or 2001) until very recently. There have always been disagreements within my clan as to which program is the best and everyone uses different things, so I switched to Trillian about a month ago. So far I think it is simply great.

2001 has far fewer bugs than 99. 99 moght as well be setting up an FTP server on your computer.

I didn't really notice any bugs in 99b. 2000 and 2001 are full of ads though and the interface is a bit weird, so I decided to stick to 99b. Trillian is much better though IMHO.

I'm using Odigo but its ICQ integration is buggy and it sometimes cuts out.

I can't run anything else, ICQ corrupted a lot of my software, AIM is crap, MSN is OK but severly limited and Trillian won't run for more than 5 minutes.

Rock and a hard place...

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

He said the H-word! D'oh!   [j/k]

Well, I tend not to use messaging programs much because they eat up too much of the time I mean to do work in, but when I do, I use my... umm... fixed version of ICQ.

*Sorry to go off topic a little (a lot actually   )*

I think it's interesting that a hacker was a person who attempted to understand something by taking it apart(not nessicarily computers). Until of course the media got their grubby little mitts on the word and changed the description to 'evil computer genius who's sole mission in life is to steal your information and destroy your computer'.

Yeah, that is annoying...I remember when I was trying to explain to someone that hacker really means someone good with computers, and not someone who cracks them...

Oh god, not again! I hate that thing so much. In spite of this frighteningly real site created from the minds of dung beetles we must always remember that
