newbs can't figure out how to start, the forum is a bit of a mess.
I hate to complain but I'm a forum member on some different websites and in my sig I state my love for freespace along with a reccomendation for ppl to try it.

on 3 occasions I've been asked by ppl who aren't even members but have either stumbled into the forum I'm at or have had members ask me how the heck to get ahold of the Open installer along with a request for assistance on how to install it...... they've also asked "what the heck is an open installer".

I've no problem helping out when asked but the fact that the last request came from somebody who had previously installed 3.6.5 and couldn't find where to get the latest installer speaks poorly about the layout of the forum.

I'm not saying their is a lack of information but it's a mess.

please consider listing on a level of importance all necesary files and links to get a newbe up and running.

I apologise for the request but I do understand why ppl are having trouble when the only available link to the lastest installer is 10 topics down from the top....... in reality it's likely one of the most important file downloads of them all......

I understand community announcements have their place along with discussions about freespace but longtime freespace players likely would know where to have this type of discussion while newb's just want to play it for the first time and aren't so focused on what's been going on in the forums lately.

again I apologise but I believe eliminating the confusion in how to setup freespace for first time newbs is one of the most important aspects for new gamers entering the forum and it's a daunting task atm to say the least.

p.s. please keep these high priority forum threads short on inane chatter about how nice the new installer is as well by redirecting any requests for support to the support section of the forum.

Should make a new Child Board called "Getting Started" and lock & sticky some of its threads.  Only admins can change the instructions; others can make their own threads with suggestions.  Or they could just use my siggy.  j/k

Second news post.

If you've got any other suggestions, be my guest. It's just that we've tried things like this before, and nothing happened.

EDIT: See this.

perfect idea along with placing it higher on the forum mainpage so it is one of the first things noticed.

as a side note as suggestions are considered/accepted or discarded I believe it would be best if they remained in a seperate thread off of the "getting started" primary thread.
