If it aint V it aint *the unspeakeable*
First off, i already know very well about the soreness of the subject and such and such, ive been around long enough to know evrything about this community, for those who dont know much of me, and i am prepared for the very likely event that i will be flogged for asking something like this, but ive searched my ass off and cant find an answer to a very strong question ive been having recently.

Has anyone tried contacting V about possibly, coming up with a story-line, or perhaps if they already had one in mind for the absent third in our beloved series.

I mean, hell, it worked for starsiege 2845, so i know by asking this im not just talking out of my ass.

Currently V has no way of making the absent third, so it seems to me, theyd have nothing to lose by giving up the story.
Ontop of that, in the rare chance i am correct, and V hands it over, im more than convinced that, with perhaps some idea for ships or basic sketches from V we could put together a similar project to Starsiege 2845, since the main problem is that all the other ideas for the unspeakeable third (the community project extravaganza version) is that, it wouldnt be V, but if they gave us the story, even though we would be the ones to put it together, it would still, be infact, V.
Put this in your profile if you know someone who is fighting, has survived, or has died from an awp no scope.

Re: If it aint V it aint *the unspeakeable*
Let's suppose your idea has some merit.  Don't get me wrong, there's none to be found, but let's take the hypothetical scenario where your idea is actually worth the time it takes someone to read it.  Does this community really need to start another project that it will never finish?  Look at the magnitude of FS2, and look at the projects of similar magnitude that people have tried to complete.  If we get an official plot outline and concept art delivered to us tomorrow, we'd be lucky to get the campaign released by 2054 for my 70th birthday.  FreeSpace is a good game series and all, but by that time, my decaying mind and body would probably render me incapable of eating solid food, let alone playing a 'new release' for an old space sim.  Moreover, given the similar state the 'FS3' developers would be in by the end of the development......well.....I'm not sure I want to imagine what kind of FREDing would come from a paranoid, old man incapable of speaking without ranting incomprehensibly and drooling.

Anyway, this ground has been trod upon many, many times before.  If Volition going to hand us a plot outline, they would have done it already.  There's enough projects set in the post-FS2 period, you can just pick your unreleased campaign and use some form of association therapy to make your brain mentally override any instances of its actual title with 'FreeSpace 3'.

Regardless of how long you've been in the FS community, you're having a noob moment.  It happens, but this is why there's a 'preview' button that you can click before posting a new thread, so you can stop yourself from making innane suggestions like this.  Now, you stay there, while I go get a bludgeoning object to properly beat the lesson into your skull.

This topic has gone fourth many times before, and people have contacted V before. The most hlp gets out of them is a pat on the back, and somehow we got some of the original non compressed music from them.

I have gotten results:

Just an update... the following was a few e-mail exchanges I had with :v: that you might find of interest.

Yes, I'm afraid I was looking for FS1 renders... :(

But, on a positive note, any information from Volition about anything Freespace (1 or 2) is like gold on the HLP.  It's almost a cult, lol.  So, although they could have used a Galatea or Bastion mainhall render, they (HLP) would be extremely grateful for anything (FS1 & FS2) they could get their hands on, I'm quite sure.  BTW, they did manage to get the mainhall working, using a lower resolution... it just doesn't look the same as it would have.

Thanks for answering, BTW.  :)

Hi,

This is Josh checking back in.  Just wondering if you finished all those projects you were busy with.  If you are, could you check into that old FS data you have on tape?  If you're still busy, though, I don't mean to be a bother, I was just wondering if you had the spare time yet.  :)

Thanks,

Josh

PS If you've got time and are interested, they've got screenies of the work they've been doing with the new graphics... and even these are outdated!

To be more specific, I'd be doing the work and I'm totally and utterly
swamped. Try me in a couple months after I've knocked down some of my
workload. I have quite a number of time sensitive, major projects that need
to get underway.

I do need to get the data off those tapes before long, and it's nice of you
to offer to buy the equipment, but that's not necessary. It's not the cost
of the equipment - it's the timesink and the possibility of needing a data
recovery specialist.

Even then I can make no promises about whether or not the original source
art to produce the renders will be on those tapes.

I'm really not trying to cop out here, although it certainly does look that
way ;)

Subject: Clarification :)

Hi, guys,
thanks for the response! (I was afraid everything was
dead up there, as the "Contact" page wasn't working
for a few weeks when I tried the first time.)
I was just wanted to clarify, though,
a) exacly what *kind* of tape drive would you need?
(What kind of tape would it have to be able to
handle?)
b) And, if I can get the answer to a), what's you
guys' mailing address? (If you guys have any time and
are agreeable to doing that sort of thing)
c) If I get a & b, would you guys be able to upload
that content, or get it to one of us (HLP) somehow? I
don't want to be a bother, but I figure it can't hurt
to ask, you can always say "no" ;-)
The reason for my asking all of this is that I'm
pretty sure the folks at HLP ( www.hard-light.net )
would love to get that stuff, (specifically in this
case, they're trying to port the FS main hall for the
FSPort project [they already have one version, but I
think they'd like the high-res renders, as it'd look
prettier]
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,22550.0.html
) As I said, the original FS stuff would probably help
them alot for other FS Source Code Project designs. (
homepage: scp.indiegames.us , but it's usually more
cutting edge at www.hard-light.net/forums under Source
Code Project, they've got the recent CVS builds and
such there).
So, I'm trying to see how much it would cost to get
that drive for you guys, assuming
1) It wouldn't cost a million bucks
2) You guys wouldn't mind getting it to us somehow
3) There's no legal issue with all of this (please, no
:( )

PS I've let three of the HLP members know that I've
contacted you, they'd probably know alot more (about
the project as well as which other members' projects
could use the stuff) as they're admins and such. But
I just decided to see if anything was possible to get
that stuff into circulation. The three knowing about
this are Goober5000 , karajorma , and WMCoolmon .
They said it couldn't hurt for me to try.
Any info appreciated, and if what I'm asking isn't
possible, feasible, or desirable for you or me/us,
sorry for bugging & wasting your time! :)
Thanks again.
Josh

What do you think guys; should I drop him a line, or wait some more time?

Pretty cool. :)

But I wouldn't push your luck.  Two months is the absolute minimum possible interpretation of "a couple of months"; it could definitely take longer.  I would double it at the very least, to four months.

He sounded like a really friendly and accommodating guy, though; which is great. :)

Hi, just thought I'd post an update on the message I received from :v: and the reply I sent back.  Turns out they're (he is) busy...sounds like you guys!

It's not a simple process to get all the data off the tapes.  It would

Re: If it aint V it aint *the unspeakeable*
In an attempt to send this thread in a direction that isn't straight to hell, from what little we've been told, :v: never really had a fleshed-out plan for FS3, beyond perhaps a few broad concepts.  (For instance, we know that the Shivans were "symptoms of a bigger problem," and we also know that the game would have featured ships large enough "to affect local gravity.")  It's not as though there's a huge stack of design documents, complete with dialog and concept art, tucked away in their offices somewhere.  There really isn't anything for them to release to us, other than content from the two existing games.

And even if there were, and ignoring all of the obvious issues about completion time...just who would be working on it?  Who would determine what the new ship models would look like, what weapons would be included, what the music would sound like, how the missions would play out, and who would voiceact it?  You'd have twenty or thirty people signing up for the project, each with their own personal idea of how FS3 should look and play.  There's no way you can expect any sort of coherent product to come out of that sort of situation.

The most I've heard is that the :v: team would still be willing to flesh out and produce FS3 if not for Interplay owning the license and THQ saying no (work on so-and-so project).

Remember game-producers have alot of leeway compared to almost any other business; they are allowed to express art however they want, as long as the project they work on gets done semi-on time. I contacted them about getting some better weapon effects; the sounds and sights could be improved. I have had no response in a few months.

jr2, if you'd take five seconds and check BF's registration date...yea, exactly. Go cry in your corner now. In fact, I seem to remember the only way you could tell that I wasn't a n00b was because I had a custom title under my name (even though for some reason you do as well). Stop thinking you've been around here long enough to start calling other members n00bs (and even when you have been around here long enough, don't do it).

At any rate.

It should really be against the law to hide that much l337-ness with only 100 posts.  My apologies, BlueFlame.  It appeared from your postcount that you were a relative newb being a n00b.  Although I should have checked, I suppose.  I had thought you just barely got over your HLP welcome beam and you were lecturing Krackers87.  In fact, you were here before the Welcome beam.  This, I must say, is embarrasing.

Let me add to that, because obviously didn't get the gist (which is surprising because you have such a high post count you must be |_3370rz LOLZ!!11). A person's reg date or their post count doesn't matter, it's how they act. And you're making a fool of yourself (more than once), by assuming that low post count = stupid.
