"Keeping Space Combat Alive", including many mods and ports to FS2O!!
A killer find--I was talking to one of the editors at TwitchGuru on the phone... basically FS2 came up! The article "Keeping Space Combat Alive". Quite a few FS2O mods are there.

Yah. I'm probably going to be writing for them  . Not so much the games themselves as making systems that will run modern and future games smoothly.

I suppose you can always try running FSO with mv_adveffects.vp in a BoE-like mission to stress test them. If they don't spontaneously combust, they're in good shape. If they do, well, not your money, and I'm sure there'll be fire extinguishers somewhere nearby :p

That's actually going to be one test I run through ALL computers I examine--how well it deals with this game as well as other FPS, etc, games.

3.6.10 should allow you more wiggle room.. reduces memory footprint by half, according to taylor.  3.7.0 would be even better, I bet.

With this job I'm getting I can buy a new computer :) . It'll probably be a Pentium Dual-core E2160 on a Zalman CNPS9700, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, GeForce 8800GTS 320MB, P35 motherboard, about a 320GB hard drive, all enclosed in an XClio A380 Plus and running WinVista Ultimate. Then, in August or so, upgrade to a Q6600 for $230, an addition 2-4GB of RAM, and wait for the next big update. Maybe build an el-cheapo Linux box out of the spare components.
