I think most of us would like to have seen this

Quote
As many as 10 vehicles drove around barriers and onto freshly poured concrete on a busy thoroughfare during rush hour. Two got stuck, Mequon police said Thursday. "Once someone goes around the barricade and busts through the tape, others follow," Sgt. Tony Restivo said.

The drivers started bypassing the barriers on Mequon Road under the Highway 43 overpass about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Several drivers quickly realized their mistake and were able to get back onto pavement, Restivo said. But a 2004 Lexus and a 2004 Mercury Marquis continued forward, became stuck and had to be towed, he said.

The company that poured the concrete estimates it will cost $20,000 to replace it, Restivo said. Police have not yet decided whether to ticket to the two drivers who got stuck.

I can't count the number of times it's annoyed me when I've been waiting in traffic for something only to see some dickhead pull a stunt like this one. Nice to see that sometimes it does bite you on the arse.

Call me devils advocate if you like, but here in the UK I've seen so many sets of cones that extend well over a kilometer either side of roadworks with no real hazard to be avoided within them. I can get a great view of these things as it takes us half an hour to get through the congestion that results from it.

Not to mention the sets of cones that simply haven't been removed - there's no hazard in the lane they're blocking off.

I've been sorely tempted too many times to do just what those guys did. That said, if you can't spot wet cement you can't be looking too clearly either!

In most cases I've seen progress through the roadworks themselves is fairly quick. What causes the delay is getting 3-4 lanes of traffic to condense into only one. A situation made far worse by people who speed past the lane closed in 800,  600 and 400 yards signs and then expect everyone to jam on their breaks to allow them to cut in front when they suddenly realise they're out of road.
