It's been done twice already (David Lynch's version in 1984 and John Harrison's miniseries in 2000). Can it be done a third time though and be successful? I don't know...

I've enjoyed both iterations. They are very different though. The miniseries was more faithful to the books.

Yeah, the miniseries did seem somewhat more faithful. I like some of the stuff in Lynch's version though.

I've only read a bit of House Atreides....I need to finish off the original saga first (currently part way through Heretics of Dune).

Has anyone heard recently about that Spanish fan-made version? The Herbert's don't want it to be released. There's currently a petition on the Dreamers of Dune website, I think.

I liked what they did with the Dune and Children of Dune miniseries (enjoyed Children more than the first one), so if they can do it in a similar vein that would be good.

i liked dune in all 3 of its formats. the book, the miniseries, and the movie. the lynch movie had the production,k the cast and was also highly stylized and gets brownie points as an art film. the miniseries was good for a miniseries. covered more detail. but it lacked the epicness of the lynch movie. i finally got around to reading the book a couple years ago, which made me think that something better could be done.

alternatively i wouldnt mind if scifi continued to make miniseries of each of the other books. theres considerable dune material to cover and i think making another dune movie would redundant. but then again it might get more people into dune so other projects could be done.

i heard about that one. such a shame they cant continue working on it. lately ive been hooked on low budget films and i find in many cases theyre better than some hollywood movies. would be something to see. the dune universe isnt as high tech and most actiuon happens on the ground. you really dont need that much as far as special effects go. some cheap cgi was plenty for the miniseries.

ive also been trying t5o find some more info on the never finished 70's version. i hear of people talk about it, but wikipedia and youtube fail to bring up any info.

Berg is a good director and writer, but his cinema verite style isn't suited at all to Dune. If I was going to pick a director I'd go for Christopher Nolan in a heartbeat.

uma thurman as chani, im sure bruce willis could be made ugly enough to play gurney, or better yet lawrence tierney. mr pink can play thufer hawat. get this, samuel l jackson, as duncan idaho. or you could give that role to john travolta and samuel can put on a fat suit and the baron harkonan. then again you can let Ving Rhames be vladmir and make samuel l jackson be feyd ratha. on that subject Michael Madsen could be the beast rabban. lucy lu could play allia. Harvey Keitel could play the emperor, and David Carradine can play the sand worms.

being tarantino the plot need not be linear. you could start during the harkonan invasion and then the next scene can show paul riding the workm and the one after that can show alia shooting melange. i think it would be rather cool

LOL, but who'd you get to play Paul? Maybe this time they'll cast someone of a suitable age. At the start of the book he's about 15. Kyle Maclachlan looked about twice that in Lynch's film. I think it's unlikely they could find anyone in their mid-teens that would fit the role.

i finally finished god emperor. not sure if i want to continue reading heretics of dune or to swtch over to the ledgends of dune trilogy for awhile.

Having not read through the Legends trilogy I can't really advise. I found God-Emperor to be the most different from the previous novels.... loads more philosophy to get your head around in that one. As for Heretics of Dune, from what I've read so far I think it could turn into my favourite book of the original series. It goes into some extra depth about the BG's schemes and also the Tleilaxu, which is interesting.

From what I can tell from Dune fans' posts on other forums, especially among those that grew up reading Frank's original series before Brian started his, there's a fair bit of dispute as to whether or not the prequel books should be considered (dare I say it) 'canon' among the fanbase. Lots of them think that there's some sort of marked contrast between Brian's storytelling and that of his dad's, or something like that. Some of them say to new readers that you should read the original series first before reading any of Brian's / Kevin J. Anderson's series, because they've somehow 'spoiled' the Duniverse..... dunno how exactly having not read any of them and not wanting to have the plot spoiled.

Having read other books Kevin J. Anderson has authored / co-authored, I can't say I'd be surprised.  He takes otherwise cool ideas / characters and renders them flat, predictable, and disappointing.  Nothing could have killed my interest in the new Dune books faster than seeing his name on the cover.

might as welll finish off frank's original books then. im not really much into reading and i dont see me reading every book with dune on the cover. the only reason the ledgends of dune trilogy really intrests me is because it mainly deals with the butlerian jihad, which i dont think frank covered vary well. but when you consider the amount of scifi material out there about computers taking over, then you understand why. instead he focused on the social aftermath of such an event with the long term distrust of all things digital.

Yeah, and then there's the idea about technology being a 'crutch', and when the Butlerian Jihad took it away, humans were forced to train themselves to act as biological alternatives to machines, like the mentats.

It could be that Brian and Kevin will use the film to somehow 'canonise' (in the fans' minds) their work on the prequels, because, depending on how much they're able to influence the storyline, they could add stuff to it that alludes to historical events that they've dealt with in their books (like the jihad). Then that would supposedly silence the pro-Frank naysayers.

Wait and see, that's what I say. I hope it isn't going to be turned into a standard vengeance quest action film. There's stuff in the book about ecology, politics, interdependence, coming of age/growing up (a bit anyway, sort of), culture, religion....so much stuff, it's kind of why some said Dune couldn't be adapted to film in the first place.
