Re: Crysis Has Been Shipped
At the risk of heresy, Halo 3 was a better game.
And that's not saying much. :doubt:

Another case of an overhyped game given marks just a tad too high for it by the "gaming press". Props to the Aussies on IGN for actually marking the thing down considering it only looks shiny on about 20% of today's computers, and pretty darn mediocre on anything else. When you take away the "groundbreaking" pretties, it's really just an average modern shooter with a few gimmicks thrown into the mix.

Actually, it's saying quite a lot IMO. Halo 3 had better atmosphere, better story, and even better acting(!). The shinies were there, sure, but Crysis really didn't understand how to use them, the story was pretty cheese, the gameplay wasn't as good, the AI leaves a lot to be desired. Crysis' AI is just breathtakingly ****ty and also pretty obviously cheating since it gets more accuracy then you can out of its guns, plus it doesn't even pretend to coordinate. Just to top it off, they should have made the protagonist more silent or gotten a different actor. He doesn't sound the role.

Re: Crysis Has Been Shipped
I'm not all that impressed with this graphics engine from what I've seen of the demo. Sure, on the highest settings the graphics are in a different league from anything else right now, but there is no computer right now that can run it well at such settings. On low/medium settings, it looks the same or worse than other current games but still runs relatively poorly.

It seems like a good game otherwise, apart from the short length that people are reporting. From what I saw in the demo, the gameplay and level design were similar to Far Cry, which is good. I liked Far Cry's gameplay and nonlinearity a lot.

Re: Crysis Has Been Shipped
...this is ridiculous.

Lowest difficulty and everything the final boss battle just kills me over and over and over with no real signs of progress or any clues on how I'm doing it wrong, or better, or anything. The gun they gave you for it doesn't even seem to actually work. It's like all the playtesters went home before doing this and it was shipped that night.

This may well join that very short list of games I snapped the CD before completing.

At the risk of heresy, Halo 3 was a better game. Crysis is shiney, but it's ultimately cheese too. And I haven't even finished it yet; it just manages to annoy the hell out of me in several places and several ways.

They even went into the total idiot's bag of tricks and tossed in invincible enemies in the part I'm stuck on, to force you to sneak past. You can't convince me that these stupid aliens are living through multiple shotgun blasts to the face at 2 feet when I killed one earlier with a single blast to the torso at 9 feet earlier. Bastard Crytek people.

??? Halo 3 sucks. :nervous:

Invincible enemies? Where?
There is only one alien when you first enter their motership in the Core level but he hits you once and then runs away and dissapears.
There is that giant spider like thing that's shielded but it can be killed....later in the game :P

somebody is pissed for some reason. Methinks it the "irrational hate since it's better than the game I love" syndrome. I had it once.. I irrationaly hated Freespace. yes, shocking, I know. Glad I went over that.

As for your comments, I find it exactly the opposite. I find Halo's story cheese and acting terrible, not to mention the AI. And i simply love Nomads voice.

1 Take out the turrets
2. Wait till Helena brings down the shield on the arm guns (hide behind someting and shoot down those pesky alien drones while you wait)
3. Use the TAC gun ON THE ARMS - wait for hte lock.
4. Blow open the hatch below
5. Launch a TAC into the opening.
6. Get the hell out of there and into the VTOL before the thing chrashes into the carrier.

No, it's mediocre. Crysis is also mediocre. Hence, the two are similar and thus easily comparable.

Re: Crysis Has Been Shipped
Well, to be fair Crysis does have some things that earn him negative points...it IS a bit on the short side.

the story is good, but then again it is predicatable. When a good looking scientist chick sez to a admiral that using nukes against the aliens might be too dangerous as they may not have any (positive) effect, you KNOW that's just what's gonna happen.
The invulnerable shields is cheese as it gets (no offense Lucy, but it is cheese  :p )

Alltough quite technicly its never said they really are invulnerable...just the the standard RPGs, rifles and 40-120mm shells can't seem to penetrate. It's not like us humies don't have bigger calibers in our arsenal.

Unless you're playing at a very low resolution, I know from all the benchmarks I've seen that you're getting drops to around 20fps in intense fights. That is unimpressive performance on what is still basically the best card around.

Granted, the game does look spectacular even on high, but less so if you turn things down to medium or low, and you don't gain enough performance for doing that. This engine definitely exhibits signs of poor optimization. I think many people aren't noticing that because they try to run it on max settings regardless of their hardware and it looks so good then.

They're not telling me a damn thing. Aside from Helena's "Get close to it" at the start, I hear nada.

EDIT: Oh wait, excuse me. I thought the exosuit was the last boss. Lord knows it should have been. The real final boss was, as somebody already said, an escapee from an 80's game. He was also pathetic as all hell and no actual threat to the player. The exosuit killed me upwards of 40 times. The warship didn't do it once.

Rly? the exosuit didn't even graze me.

The warship itself isn't dangerous as long as you use cover (damn freeze beam) and blow off it's turrets, but the other pests it launches are irritating as hell :P

Re: Crysis Has Been Shipped
There's only one place where the freeze beam on the exosuit can't get you, as I discovered repeatedly, which is waaaay back behind the downed VTOL. Also beyond a certain point you don't really seem to be hurting him anymore, though I suppose you really are (but can't prove it; I was reloading behind cover when he went down and came out only in time to see his legs flying off into the sea; one of the Marines got him I guess).

There are a couple of places that are mostly safe (behind the destroyed jet near the island) but it'll still get you a lot of the time. And the whole being frozen but not dead thing was pure game designer sadism, IMO, because they know it'll take the game longer to load from a save then it will to just wait there and die (though I once survived in frozen state for two minutes). You don't ever thaw, so you're dead, but they're going to pretend otherwise and make you wait.

Re: Crysis Has Been Shipped
???

you thaw in about 15-20 seconds...unless he manages to hit you again...which usually breaks you into little peaces and kills you.

Most of the time he freezes you you are dead since those flying pests will hit you before you defrost, but you very well can survive and get back into the fight.

Re: Crysis Has Been Shipped
Yeah, I too think the story was waay too short and screams sequel. :doubt:

Minor shortcomings, the game crashed once while streamloading the cave map, and my FPS took a MAJOR hit at the very last part whenever I actually looked at the aliens to shoot at them - had to turn everything down to Low (from Medium LOL). I can't go higher than Medium anyway - totally unplayable, and my box is XP.

And firing the handguns too fast results in sounds not playing. I love the handguns

This game has entertained me enough, that's all I can say...

Re: Crysis Has Been Shipped
beat it on hard :D

the demo looked promising and the game was pretty good but there were some major annoyances in the game.

first off the performance wasnt consistent. in the demo i got a stable framerate at between 40 and 50 fps with full detail. yet most of the game and mainly the boss sequences you get severe framerate loss dropping it to less than 5 fps. i actually see this in alot of games. they just want to cram every effect they came up with in the final boss. **** the gamer who has to defeat that boss at 3 fps. my computer is very high end, fastest cpu you can get without buying an extreme edition or a quad core, 4 gigs high performance memory, and an 8800gts. its no factory overclocked alienware but its still a ****ing ass hauler. so why is the game so slow? **** even the cutscenes were choppy at times.

there were some bugs with weapon select. like there were some instances where it wouldnt let me select my rocket launcher, instances where i really needed a rocket launcher. there was also a set of control mappings for the helicopter which wasnt used in the game, maybe it gets used in multi. also i hate the way the control configuration was setup. different keys for different vehicles. i used r and f keys for the verticle thrust axis, but i wasnt allowed to use the same keys for the horn and headlights for ground vehicles. a general set of vehicle controls would have been nice so i dount have to go too far away from wsad to honk my horn for example. another thing that really pisses me off. the game supports an xbox 360 controller, but not a real joystick. its something that would be nice when flying aircraft for example. what gives?

the ****ing story was a cliffhanger, thus locking me into a sequel. i dont mind it when games leave room for a sequel. decent 2 comes to mind, prey was another example, but neither of those left any unfinished buisness. in both d2 and prey, the main conflict of the game was resolved. but here the problem wasnt solved and the aliens werent defeated. obviously they want to steal my money. therefore i will make sure to pirate, not buy, the sequel(s). this has money grubbing corprate dicksucking all over it and my ethics require i get revenge by pirating the game and maybe keying the project leader's ferrari.

some of the chatter from the characters was rather annoying. like when they were telling me how to defeat the boss every 5 seconds. like if you got hit by the freeze ray, youd hear it at least twice before you thawed out. or that part where you man the aa gun get in the gun and shoot down squiddys. after shooting like 4 or 5 of them down, then i get out before its about to blow up and its almost out of ammo too. and then what do the npcs do, within 5 seconds one of them tells me to man the gun (it blows up 2 seconds later). i hate it when games do that.

the ai was ****. they dont even duck when they hear a sniper rifle go off. i created a nice pile of corpses around one of the pilbox guns with the precision rifle. one after another they each mounted the gun after i killed the last guy. this was actually more comical than annoying.

id give the game 3 or 4 stars (3 if they dont patch some of those bugs in the next point release, and add support for all joysticks, and performance tweaks, ect...).

Well, it did have a lot of bugs and a patch will be released soon that should fix em, as well as further optimize the game to run better.

That said, the AI is pretty good. not spectacular, but it's better than allmost anything out there. You have to remember that they enviroment is DYNAMIC and programing a AI in there is far more difficult than a in most games.

It's funny, I'm hearing from most players that Crysis really isn't that great, yet it got so many almost perfect scores it's ludicrous.

And the AI did seem really dumb from the videos I saw - I even saw in one of the coolest preview clips how you could walk up to an AI and they'd take their sweet time to turn around and actually shoot you.
