  • A one hit wonder, you still want to touch this.
How many of you connect to unsecured wireless networks and do crazy things like check your email, login to messengers...maybe even do some banking...on an unsecured wireless network?

Well, that's different than say hopping on unsecured wireless and checking your email :P

To be fair, unless its work or sensitive email there probably isn't going to be a problem, especially as the number of people who leave unsecured wireless networks lying around are usually those who can't figure out / be bothered to configure their network properly.

That said, I won't touch my sensitive email accounts or banking information over even a secured wireless network, because they still leak like a sieve.

Get-rich quick scheme #343:

1) Set up a wide-area unsecured wireless network in a high-volume traffic area that has plenty of secluded parking spots. Install packet sniffing software.
2) ?
3) Profit!

Recently i was stuck on a laptop where the only net i could use was on stinking wireless. I really don't trust wireless very much with as easy as wep can be cracked these days, and as incompatible as wpa can be for some devices.

I'm not too much of a fan of wireless even with the encryption. The idea of all my data being broadcasted over a specific radius is easily less secure than a wired connection. Just not a fan of wireless. And yeah, pretty much unsecure wireless networks are only good for anything else you do that doesn't require any kind of logging in of any service. Such as like what people said here, porn and downloading fs2 :P

At least it's good for something. But yeah, being stuck with this laptop, and leaching off of someone elses wireless router over the night, well it was very limited. Oh yay, i checked the news, that's all i can do besides using all my messengers, email, logging into my college website, and checking my myspace.

Well, there was one thing i did log into on this unsecure wireless network....FS2NETD  There's not much modification when it comes to fs2netd since it's mainly just a really cool record book.

I actually spent a lot of time on HLP on unsecured wireless networks before that one got WEP protected.

Now I am planning to  install Linux on my laptop so I can use my Centrino card to hack it :D.

a fun thing to do is go around town, log into unsecured routers with the factory password, set an admin password. then do something like block http :D

i use a mac filter to keep people off my network, then wpa encryption. i wanted to use wpa2 but half my computers barely supported wpa as it was. i also rotate keys every week or so. i figure it takes as long to break a wpa key as it does to crack a password. using a new random key every week, doesnt give enough time for a brute force attack and makes dictionary attacks useless.  most brute force crackers take that long to crack a simple rar password. so i figure im 99.8% safe. i think this is what enterprise wpa does. rotates out keys faster than they can be cracked.

Very nice idea. Through this wireless can be very secure. I think i feel safer if i did something like get a wireless router anytime in the future using your plan.

Well, at the same time i don't have a laptop. And i'm not going to get wireless for my desktop (wireless for desktop is like useless). But i do keep a wireless card in the back of my machine in case the net goes out here in my apartment. Then i can switch over to one of the wireless routers from some other person upstairs

Unsecured wireless will be a backup access to the net should gci cable want to have some down time.

gci sucks, i dont think they ever upgrade their equipment. ive seen people with the same cable modems that were released back when i was still in high school up in anchorage. they only recently upgraded to newer antique cable modems which they no doubt bought from a cable company down south who was upgrading their modems to something better, and selling their old modems to the stupid alaskan cable company. :D

LOL Well alascom isn't much better really. So says how adequate they are in delta junction. That's how alaska goes, we don't even get the newer cell phones, every thing's last years cell phone tech, which usually only ends up being motorola, lg, or samsung phones. It can suck up here.
