That...

- Can sort by artist, then album, then song, and show length
- Has an equalizer
- Has as less other crap as possible

EDIT: It's a music player, though... so you'll need somethign else for videos anyway.

VLC can sort by title, album and artist, but at glance I didn't see any way to sort by length. WinAmp Lite might work for you.

Wait till amarok gets ported to windows? It's just around the bend with windows version betas currently. The overall ability of this is being able to use an ipod and interface with it a lot easier, aside from that it's really cool and has all of what you want.

Winamp on the other hand also has all of what you want and a really nice equalizer (you should get this one). But definitely try out amarok for windows, it's interesting, you may like it.

I second the Foobar 2000 nomination.  You cannot get more minimalist than that.  And, if you can be bothered, it is infinitely customizable.

winamp is very modular, and its very easy to uninstall modules you dont use. i disable more than 3/4 of the default features for my install.

Winamp all the way. It can play almost anything from .MID (yes, you heard me, MIDI files) too .FLAC, and plays .divx with a plugin or if you have the xvid codec. And all this is free. It has a good equalizer, and a lot of plugins if you could possibly want more. I ditched windows media player years ago for this. It can also create playists and has a media library for you to sort your songs from. Very simple IMO.

yes, but it will run in a dos box. it can run under native dos and supports most creative sound cards.

I would recommend zplayer.  It does everything you're looking for, has everything you want, and nothing else.

Hmmm. The things that plague amarok. Which is bad audio quality and horrible equalizer. Besides that it's a revolutionary program. Waiting to see if 2.0 has the better equalizer and better audio quality. So far the only stuff that's good is exaile (gtk equivalent of amarok minus the bad sound quality), xmms, and winamp.
