No, this is not a thread asking if there is going to be a sequel like those back in the day.

I actually just read a press release that could mean we are getting a sequel after all this time...

At the same time, the company will leverage its portfolio of gaming properties by creating sequels to some of its most successful games, including Earthworm Jim, Dark Alliance, Descent, and MDK.

Is it 100% official? No. But hey, better than nothing... I ran a quick search and did not see this posted, the original article was posted not too long ago anyway.

Personally I hope they don't make a sequel for FS (Developers Developers Developers Developers!), but I doubt they will anyway, FS wasn't exactly a very successful title for them.

And I know it's Descent: FreeSpace, but FreeSpace has basically nothing to do with Descent.

Righty-oh. didn't want to irritate Mijenix Corporation, the creators of the one and only true Freespace. So, they threw Descent as a prefix, so that the names would be different (on some corners of the world, it is actually known as Conflict: FreeSpace - The Great War).

But meh. I don't care what they'll do now. More FreeSpace, more Descent, more MDK... just do what you wanna do.

It is not part of the Descent computer game series, and contained none of the ideas or materials from them. It was only prefixed with Descent to avoid trademark issues with Mijenix Corporation's "FreeSpace", a disk compression utility.

Volition also used the term "FreeSpace" in the game to initially describe what became later known as subspace.

There you have it. "Descent" in order to avoid legal battles, and "FreeSpace", which was a tiny accident, because they decided to call subspace "subspace" after naming the game.

And I'd still say "free space", when talking about disk space. With a space. Free[space]space. Not together. Separately. And I'm telling you. That space makes a difference.

Descent, as mentioned by Lobo, was used because Freespace wasn't available. They named it FreeSpace because that was their original name for subspace.

That press release has been known for a while now, and although they talk about Descent, there is no mention of Freespace. You can also see the Descent reference on their website, but nothing related to Freespace.

It would be great to see another Descent game in any case, but that all depends on whether they can acquire enough funding to start development. The sale of the Fallout IP gave them a large cash infusion but they're still in debt.

People knew and loved the Descent series... slap its name on a box and that game will likely sell (it worked on my father, who LOVES Descent, but didn't ever get into Freespace's gameplay).

I can confirm that...unlike FreeSpace, Descent is well known in Italy. No doubt the name "Descent"
will make the game sell better.

Descent was not popular everywhere. In regions that it was not popular, the game was released as Conflict.

Hmm. A bit complicated way, if you ask me. But yeah, I suppose that if people don't really know Descent, having it as a prefix doesn't do that much good, at least if compared to Conflict. K.
