Have them in 1 7z archive, but the different colours categorised ( like 'BlueMaps', 'GreenMaps', etc. ).

Ok...normally just putting the .vp in the FreeSpace directory does the thing, but I still have red Shvians with a half red, half blue Rashaska...

1. You don't put anything to the \freespace\ folder, apart from the retail vps, the FSO executables, the Launcher and maybe the FS2 cutscene pack.
2. The map pack entry states that it requires 3.6.8 MediaVPs. There are two sets easily available at the moment: the 3.6.8 Zeta and the 3.6.10 Beta. By saying that you have 3.6.9, you are obviously referring to your FSO build. And if you are using the 3.6.9 build, it is highly likely that you have the 3.6.8 Zeta MediaVPs.

You can try, but I don't know how well it will work since I don't have the 3.6.10 mediavps. I'm not planning to support the 3.6.10 mediavps until they're out of beta (and have those nice new bombs ).

1. Yes.
2. The release thread for the 3.6.8's still exists on the FreeSpace Upgrade Project board.

Generally it is good to have any non-retail files in subfolders. That is why you put all Derelict files to \freespace\derelict. Because if everything is in the \freespace\ folder, the files will fight for dominance and priority. And if some campaign for example has its own table files, it will mess up everything else, including the FS2 campaign. And the FreeSpaceMods page for these new ships suggested that you throw the desired colour to your mediavps folder. So, put them to \freespace\mediavps.

Technically, you can continue to put stuff to your \freespace\ folder, but it requires you to constantly move stuff around, since it is likely that some mods will interfere with others. That is why it is so handy to have 'em all in subfolders that you can use with the Launcher.

And they don't work on 3.6.10 mediavps. Only the Lucifer looks normal. The HTL Ravana looks funky though ( part red, part blue ).

I've been persuaded to grab the 3.6.10 beta mediavps, so I'll have a poke around and see what I can do with them.

Putting them in the MediaVPs folder did nothing, that's why I put it in other places as well.

3.6.10 uses different maps and etc. because of more efficient mipmapping, if I remember right. So the recolour doesn't work on 3.6.10 beta mediavps.

You could rename all of the colored maps.  Remove the "a" or whatever at the end, and it should work with the beta VPs.

Requires FSO, mediavps 3.6.10 beta

Colours included:

Blue
Green
Cyan
Yellow
Magenta
White
Pink (special for TrashMan )

Installation instructions:

Extract the desired colour to either the mediavps mod directory (for all mods using mediavps) or other desired mod directory overriding mediavps.

Note: Contains ship textures, weapon/engine effects are unchanged. Mipmapping has been sacrificed.

HTL SD Ravana with fixed textures and engine glows included. It is a stopgap and should be replaced with a proper one as soon as it is released.

I don't suppose there'd be any way to switch between two color schemes in-mission?

Not really important, but it would be a neat effect to play around with.
