Baclaycard just phoned me and said they needed to confirm some of my details.

 :blah:

Obviously, I was highly suspicious, but she just asked me how old I'd be on my next birthday and seemed to know my name and address and **** already, so I decided she was cool.

Apparently someone had (within the 5 minutes preceding the call) used my credit card details to buy a single song from iTunes and charge 1p to Vodafone. Checking the card works before they use it or resell the details.

So within a whole 7 minutes of someone trying to defraud Barclaycard and I, the card was cancelled and a new one's being sent out.

I am VERY impressed with Barclays.

Well, I'm impressed with Barclaycard. If this had happened to my bank account, I'm of the opinion they'd've ignored it because they're not legally obligated to refund losses from my bank account. They can't credit-charge me for things I'm not bought, but if someone steals from my bank account it's classed more as being my 'own stupid fault' - because it's my money they're stealing and not Barclays'.

But anyways: Very impressed with Barclays.

How did they know it wasn't you buying a song from iTunes exactly?

Probably because Vodafone and iTunes were two new, small-value transactions being charged to my card for the first time within a very short space of time.

Or the scammer people hit a ****load of accounts up for tiny amounts all at once, and Barclays decided to call through a bunch to see what was going on.

It's like trying to obtain the AIDS.

It's almost as bad as torrenting stuff onto a generic non-protected routerless Windows 98.  Hell, it might be worse, because the aforementioned method is more cost effective.

How bad is that really? You peaked my curiosity.

WTF is up with only buying one itunes song? Maybe they were testing the card out first to see if you were a dumbass and wouldn't notice or if barclays wouldn't notice. Then if no one notices buy something WAY bigger (like 2 songs...from rhapsody ;7)?

As I've said, they use the small charges to see if the card is still active. Or they'll hit up 10k cards at once for £1.50 purchases.

And, no, not my fault. Probably.

The only two places I've used my credit card that aren't massive international online businesses are Bitz Box for WH40k parts and Studs And Spikes for studs and spikes. But they both seem vaguely legitimate.

It could've been hacked, sniped, intercepted or stolen from just about anywhere.

The **** gets snagged from all kinds of places and then they details get sold in thousand-strong lots on various websites.
