Cheers Dekker, I ended up putting down for 'Engineer Corps Officer' and giving it a crack, got myself a date on Jan 24 to do aptitude testing and an initial interview. I did a little bit of reading about the Royal Australian Engineer Corps and about what CE's do, in terms of the counter mobility and general construction tasks which particularly appealed to me. The mobility tasking seemed bloody cool, with bomb disposal, obstacle clearance, road and airfield maintenance among it.
I'd be happy to be enlisted as an OR CE, but you're right about them being different kettles of fish for sure, and Officering is really the one I've dreamed about for yonks (though straight Combat Engineering is my second pref option). Either way, it seems like a bloody good way to have some more fun and get some use out of the 3 years I've got to spend at uni (since I've decided I may as well finish a degree I start and my objectives have turned to how to make myself more competitive and get the most use out of those 3 years).
Whether I get accepted is another thing entirely, though, since I understand that there aren't too many 18/19 year old Officer Cadets walking around at the Royal Military College. Oh well, best to give it a good shot!
get shot. that's probably a good one to start with. or blow yourself up.
Those seem like two very good reasons to listen in training.

And that was the interesting **** that happened in my day.
