the surf is big, but it's garbage.  most of it is just wash.  there were some breakers out past the end of the pier, but they were closeouts.  not that you'd ever make it out there anyway.

all this not counting the insane wind and i'd have to guess accompanying cross currents.  i went out in shorts so i'd have less soggy clothes sticking to me and weighing me down.  bad idea.  my legs got sand blasted to hell.  and next time i go out, i'm wearing some ski goggles or something. 

there might be something tuesday, and maybe a little bit of leftovers wednesday.  hopefully i can get out of work early enough.


edit:  just noticed my hands are slightly shaking.  crap.

well that was a bag of **** i had to deal with. computer was acting fine for an hour or so and then started acting wonky. since there were issues with my bios recognizing my hard drive i assumed the hard drive was the problem. which ultimately turned out to be partially correct. i have removed the drive, mirrored over my os partition onto a smaller, older, and likely slower hard drive. oddly enough the original hard drive still works, just not attached to this mobo. its currently sitting in an external enclosure, and is connected through a sata -> usb bridge. now i need to figure out how to get 400 gigs of files onto a 180gb partition. to that end, i am deleting large things that i no longer need, like windows vista service packs, discogs of bands i no longer like, code libraries i never used, drivers for hardware long since thrown to the scrap heap, outdated linux/windows iso files and the like. and i might as well nuke any games installed to that drive as well. then i will archive old never changing files into big 7zip archives to free up more space.  so my 400 gigs of files will look more like 250 when im done. still wont fit but who cares.

looks like the abridged version of my files isnt much different from the full version. after i realized that other than my disk images (40 gigs) and my video collection (180 gigs), i had enough space for everything else with 50 gigs to spare. i also managed to cull out about 50 gigs of crap, and saved about as much space by archiving a bunch of old source code in 7zip files. nothing like a hard drive pseudo-failure to organize your data.

im now considering putting my 640 gig drive in here instead. its backup is a tad out of date considering the cleanup i just did. and i would have the abridged version as backup. 320 gigs is a little tighter than i like. and the 640 gig is just collecting dust in a barely used computer. its also newer, more reliable, and has a bigger cache. so more hard drive shenanigans tomorrow.

Yep.  Pressure here is down to 991mb and dropping fast.  If the models are correct, I'll be seeing the lowest pressure in recorded history for Washington DC. (Record is 966mb in March 1993, records go back to 1929).

I don't understand why people who don't pay attention to meteorology feel like they can form opinions about it.

Sandy is not a hurricane.  Hurricanes draw their energy from the latent heat released from the evaporation of warm sea water.  A hurricane has a warm core and its wind field is intense but focused near the center of the storm.

Sandy is a hybrid storm in the process of becoming extra-tropical, and is drawing baroclinic energy from a massive temperature gradient.  Such storms have a cold core and their wind fields cover a far greater area.  Sandy's windfield covers a third of the country.  This also means that the biggest threat is storm surge more than wind and rain.

The destructive potential of Sandy's storm surge is rated a 5.8 out of 6.0 -- the highest for any storm since 1969.  The storm surge is already causing major problems and the center of Sandy hasn't even hit land yet.

Sandy will do billions of dollars in damages.
