Power's flickering... won't be able stay online for long. Uncle's gonna let me know if there's an evac order in my area and then I'll leave to join him inland if need be. Hunkering down for, I have everything important packed up for now. Stuff I'm leaving behind I'll try to keep safe.

You guys can say what you want about this storm, but NJ is gonna get hit hard no matter what.

Take care and keep yourselves safe down there guys, we're about to get hit with some serious rain up here (radar is showing it'll hit where I am around 4:00-4:30) but it'll be nothing like what you're getting, and I'm not particularly near major bodies of water.

Probably should call my parents, my hometown might have issues as they're in a flood plain at the mouth of the Grand River near Lake Erie and they might be getting hit worse.

I don't understand why people who don't pay attention to meteorology feel like they can form opinions about it.

Sandy is not a hurricane.  Hurricanes draw their energy from the latent heat released from the evaporation of warm sea water.  A hurricane has a warm core and its wind field is intense but focused near the center of the storm.

Sandy is a hybrid storm in the process of becoming extra-tropical, and is drawing baroclinic energy from a massive temperature gradient.  Such storms have a cold core and their wind fields cover a far greater area.  Sandy's windfield covers a third of the country.  This also means that the biggest threat is storm surge more than wind and rain.

The destructive potential of Sandy's storm surge is rated a 5.8 out of 6.0 -- the highest for any storm since 1969.  The storm surge is already causing major problems and the center of Sandy hasn't even hit land yet.

Sandy will do billions of dollars in damages.

Weather.com is now saying it's an actual hurricane. The center is gonna hit NJ around 6pm they say.

It is a storm with both tropical and extra-tropical characteristics (it is currently undergoing the transition), and they're still calling it a hurricane because it's less confusing for the public.

The important note is that, whatever you call it, it is a powerful and dangerous storm, and people under manadatory evacuation orders need to heed them.  I'm hearing very disturbing figures coming from NJ and NY.

edit 2:  My barometer just dropped below 29 inches.  I have never seen pressure this low.

Apparently the reason the level alarm in my basement was going off was because the switch for the sewage ejector on the circuit breaker was shorted. So I guess that means it's ok to flush paper towels down the toilet after all ^.^

i finally managed to get through the log jam on surfline long enough to bring up a single still from the croatan surf cam.  apparently the waves have cleaned up a ton.  the lineup was just LOADED with surfers.

Power went out for me this afternoon around 12, but it came back on at 3, probably had to re-route power to the cities. It's dark, power is flickering every now and then. Hope you guys, that are near the shore take care.

As I saw someone else note, why the **** did they not take that thing down before the storm hit?  Were they just sleeping through the weather reports over the past week?

I can't believe I still have power, it's bounced more times than I can count.  The wind keeps getting stronger by the hour and large trees have fallen all over.  The news streaming in from all over the northeast is just unbelievable.  Looks like the NYC subway system is about to flood, if it isn't already.

Heh...now the news I'm seeing about that crane is that every construction crane in the city was inspected before the storm and certified to be "fine."  Someone's job is toast now.
