I gave him a good ten minuytes grace doing the traditional English thing of tutting and rolling my eyes. Then i gave very a very obvious "i'm gonna ruddy well knife you" style look and said in a most polite tone, Do you mind?

Standard procedure for dealing with people who fail in their own field is to make them teachers of said field.

That's not really being fair.  I personally found that, the further I went in math, the more exceedingly stupid mistakes I made with the most simple of concepts.  I've been accidentally writing negatives instead of positives since about the fifth grade.

Come to think of it, that is actually quite normal. I remember one of our department's math assistants saying that the hardest part on any math course is the addition, substraction, multiplication and division of small whole numbers. And he was right. Nothing more embarassing than seeing that you succesfully wrote 8 + 7 = 11 on your exam paper.
