You need much more than that to have permanent hearing damage. People are scared of that risk at the beginning, I know, but a few days of practice with guns leads them to realize that music is much more dangerous. Using guns for decades does not damage hearing abilities while listening to music in an exaggerate way (iPod, MP3, you name them) does.

You need to wear ear protection at all times when using firearms or risk hearing damage. Use proper range safety procedures, everybody.

Meh. My father has been using guns for what, almost 50 years and he's never used ear protections of any sort. Since the term "guns" is a bit generic it may be the case of specifying which guns can cause damage and which can't; IMHO machineguns may be dangerous if used continuously but rifles and handguns aren't comparable. At all.

He wears ear protection at the airport because planes do cause permanent hearing damage, but other than that he doesn't do anything and still has normal hearing abilities. Disco lovers can't claim the same, though.

A gunshot from an average rifle is 140-170 dB. It's not sustained, thank god (given that decibels are a logarithmic scale), but over time it will add up.
